Hi Sam, 

I've been lurking here for a while and I know you are the man to talk to when it comes to the Bionic. I really appreciate all the work that you have put into the HoB it made my first rooting experience very easy. I am hoping you can help me out with this issue.

I lost root when I took the OTA update even though Im fairly certain I did everything I was supposed to do. Alas, now I am stuck. I have safestrap installed, but when I go to the app to uninstall it, it forces closed. I was going to use HoB to FXZ it, but you have a warning there not to do it with safestrap installed.

First, let's see about fixing this root problem.  Then we'll worry about safestrap.

 

In a file explorer (root explorer, astro, es file manager, rom toolbox pro, whatever) look in the /system/usr folder.  Do you see either of these folders:

 

we-need-root

hob-need-root

 

If you have either of those folders, we can fix root.  Let me know and I can walk you through that.

 

If not, then you're going to have to bust out your linux skills and get root reinstalled using the linux exploit.  Look in the Bionic section for "easy root" for the quickest solution using a VM image that's pre-configured for you.

 

As for safestrap, the warnings do not apply to FXZ operations.  I've removed the warnings from the HoB posts because they really no longer apply.  Older versions of safestrap caused a few people issues when they tried to do updates.  FXZ overwrites everything so no big deal if safestrap recovery is installed or not.  (And note, we're talking about safestrap recovery....the app itself makes no difference in any scenario).

Okay, sorry for the delay. I do have a folder we-need-root.

Ok, so I'm going to have you do something.  In the SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic\root directory, there is a file restore.bat.  Use something like notepad or better yet notepad++ to edit it.  Near the top on the third line you will see:

 

set root_bck=/system/usr/hob-need-root/su-backup

 

change it to:

 

set root_bck=/system/usr/we-need-root/su-backup

 

Save it and close.  Now run the House of Bionic, go to the utility menu, and select restore root.  That will fix your root issue.

OK great. It looks like that restored the root, at least according to VooDoo I have root. I opened up superuser and it says it needs to update the binary but the normal install option fails.

Try rebooting the phone.  If you still can't update the su binary it could be problematic.  Not impossible to solve but a pain.

Bad news, rebooted it and it still wont install.

Get that file.  Delete all the files in SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic\root.  Unzip the root.zip from the link above into the SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic\root directory.  Run the restore root process again.  It will hopefully work.

P.S. No need to edit the restore.bat this time.  I added a new option to select which backup to use.  In your case pick the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper backup option.

Install_failed_already_exists Im guessing I should uninstall VooDoo and Su and try again?

No, it's fine.  You can ignore the install failed message.  When you open superuser does it still prompt for a su update?

Then it should be good to go.

Just did. SU checker worked and SS is now working too!

You're very welcome.  Once you verify that root is working again, run the SS app and have it install SS recovery.  Then you should be back in business.
