You can root the update or use voodoo root keeper from the market to keep root. Once you update you won't be able to unlock your bootloader. I definatly recommend unlocking !

And if your not looking to unlock, then you should consider selling it to someone that would like to unlock. That way you might make a little extra cash (assuming you are reasonable), and give someone the device they want unlocked.
Just a suggestion.

I am an old fart and trying to learn some of this. Have been reading the boards after purchasing a used Maxx HD and finding that it has taken the update and is unlockable. Have read that there are no known exploits in unlocking the bootloader. Now don't jump on me too hard, and just asking. If we have the files that they were trying to push, can someone that has vastly more knowledge than I remove the bootloader and replace it with one from a previous version that is unlockable? I see a problem with version mismatch or an invalid trusted certificate as an issue.

No. Once the OTA has been applied, if you never unlocked the boot loader before the update, you're out of luck. The latest OTA fixes the unlockable bootloader exploit once and for all. Only if you unlocked BEFORE applying OTA would you still be able to have an unlocked bootloader.
From what I understand, once you unlock the bootloader, it's a physical change in the phone where a fuse has been blown. Therefore, there is NO way to lock it back up. At least that's what I read elsewhere in this forum.
You can, however, still root the phone and use Safestrap recovery to run Safestrap ROMs (which are 4.1.2 based). RageHD is one that is Safestrap compatible. But others, like Eclipse, CM10.1 ROMs, etc, you won't be able to because those use a different kernel and therefore require an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately, unless someone releases kexec for this phone, you won't be able to run other kernels with Safestrap. Kexec is a way to circumvent the bootloader and allow a user to run a different kernel, but since the HD/HD MAXX can have the bootloader unlocked (before the OTA), I don't think you'll see any devs create kexec. It takes a lot to make this work from what I understand.
Go here to root your phone ->
This will allow you to root your phone even after the OTA has been applied. Remember, you CANNOT unlock the bootloader in any way. Motorola has closed that loophole forever.
