Engadget just posted a story about a new 440ppi, 1080p IPS display being developed for the smartphone market. Hopefully this makes it to HTC or Moto by next year.

300ish ppi is the max we ever need to go. Your eyes cannot distinguish between 320 ppi and 440ppi, its just wasted money.

With perfect eyesight from a foot away, a human can distinguish between pixels at up to 477 PPI. With average eyesight, from a foot away, 286 PPI is the magic number. If you get closer, those numbers can change fast. So...
