So i spent months talking my wife in to letting me root her razr and flash a rom on it. she finally gave in when the ICS ota came. i'm pretty experienced with these kinds of things, i've got a galaxy nexus and go through roms like underwear. The only problem is she wont just let me take off with her phone for hours to do much experimenting. ive already rooted her razr with with the latest "droid razr ustility" and it was easy(thanks matt). i'm just curious about the difference in the bootstrap recovery vs safestrap recovery. both seem like they are recoveries but i dont think all roms are compatible with both. am i wrong? so what's the difference? why not just 1 recovery like CWM or TWRP?

also, i always say the best way to find the rom that's good for is to flash them and try them out. in this case, i cant do that. i've been leaning towards flashing eclipse for her. bloat free is a must. she just really wants the phone to work and really isn't in to this kind of thing, not to mention if there is the slightest problem it will be this guys fault. any helpful thoughts are much appreciated.

Please help me prove to my wife rooting is worth it! :D

Chris

Awesome ! My girlfriend won't let me touch hers.

Safestrap vs bootstrap: boot strap is your run of the mill recovery.

Safestrap is designed to basically be a dual boot recovery by installing your roms on the "safe side" by installing them in the preinstall folder and leaving to stock rom alone so that If anything messes up you can fall back to it fairly easily.

Bootstrap is not working with ICS, so all the ics roms are using safestrap. There is a ICS bootstrap floating around but still not supported by the devs. So your best bet is to flash safestrap. And as far as roms go I'm running black widow stock deodoxed 214 and its awesome.

nice, that makes sense. on a side note, you should just sneak your GF's phone in the middle of the night and root it for her......i came REALLY close to doing that to the wifes. i'm need some way to justify why i spend "so much time" staring at my phone and setting my phone up after a flash :-)

should take less than an hour now.
Here's the steps

Backup user apps using titanium backup or whatever whenever you get a small chance. Also download eclipse v1.2 to a sd card, int or ext, and make a copy of the backup apps .apk (from data/apps) and place on a sd card

Before taking her phone dl RAZR utility 1.81 and the .215 leak.

Read up on the process to get to .215.

Now, take phone, and do the .215 leak update using the utility. (Wipe all data)

When the phone boots, use the utility, again, to root, then install safestrap.
(All these options are in the utility)
After you use the utility to install safestrap, open the app drawer and open safestrap then install the recovery.

Reboot

When the safestrap menu pops up (you will see it) hit the menu button. Then you will get into a normal looking recovery.

Wipe data again, then go to the safe system selection near the bottom, toggle safe system on.

Back to main recovery menu after safe system is enabled and make a backup.

Install eclipse like any normal rom.

When it boots, *skip all setups*!!!
Go to the included file manager and install the backup.apk app, then restore all user apps and data.

When that finishes, re sign into Google and turn on sync.

There you go. The longest parts are the app backup and restore.

Should be done in under an hour.

Thanks broseph, I hooked the wifey up before I left for work this afternoon. I didn't go with with 215, maybe I should have though.

Man, its good to see android users helping each other. Thanks again. I've been thinking how much I want a nexus 7 to have a toy to play with and not effect my only line of communication(my galaxy nexus). Playing with wife's phone for a few days helped supress my crackflashing addiction :-)

If I go from .211 to. 215 do I need to completely wipe the phone? My guess is yes, but I really like my current setup. So the next question is, what's the difference and is it worth it.

You have to be on completely stock .211 to install .215. So if you've installed a ROM, you must fastboot back, then install .215, root and then you can reinstall the ROM. .215 has upgraded radio and kernel
