Hello

I've been a lurker for a while and used what i needed her for my wife's RAZR Maxx HD and the posts i've read and tools available have been great so thanks to the community.

So here's what happened:

I have a RAZR Maxx HD that does have the random rebooting and/or just shut off issue. I tried various ROMS and was going to try and restore an old Verizon firmware as that seemed to cure some people's problems but never got around to it and wife wanted to go Moto X.

So the phone drained and shut down or it's possible it drained and/or had the "random" shut down. Now i can't get it to restart using any method and am looking where to go from here. I tried the power+volume down and it won't work; btw this was the only way to get it to reboot when it had a random shut down as well. My fear is that the battery drained with the random shutdown and now the phone won't recognize a charge and thus because it's drained and i have to use the power+volume down method i can't because it won't charge.

So anyone have any ideas? I've tried a few chargers and confirmed they all worked and even hooked up the phone to laptop and it won't recognize. Do i have to buy an aftermarket battery that already has a charge and do a swap to get it restarted? I'm thinking that is worst case scenario and would like to do something else to avoid that but not sure what else to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Leave it connected to The charge for a while. If it's been drained for s length of time it can take a while for it to register. The random reboot thing generally indicates a hardware issue which very likely could be a battery problem.

Left it charged overnight, tried to reboot..no dice. Generally while researching the random reboots no one really could figure out what started causing the random reboots and/or shutdowns. The consensus i found while reading throughout forums everywhere was that it was a software issue with a certain firmware update on certain phones so it's like a combo software/hardware issue. Motorola replaced most of those phones under warranty if within 1 year old but i specifically bought this phone because it was bootloader unlocked. So even if this phone is within the 1 year from purchase (which i doubt) i'll get a phone with a locked bootloader as a replacement.

I watched a video on battery replacement and seems rather easy as i've repaired a handful of phones but as i said in original post, would like to avoid.

Two (possibly three) options. First, you could either by or fashion a factory programming cable. These cables supply voltage to pin for, and otherwise unused pin on the USB plug. This bypasses the charging circuit on the phone and powers the phone directly, and also supplies power directly to the battery.

The reason that the battery isn't taking a charge can be due to the battery having been discharged too low, and now the charger is unable to supply sufficient voltage to both kick the battery back into charging mode, and at the same time startup and power the charging circuit on the phone. By bypassing the circuit on the phone, you supply all of the power directly to the battery, allowing the battery to take a charge and begin the normal charging process afterwards.

It is recommended that you don't leave this cable connected to the phone for periods of longer than about 30 minutes at a time, and after each 30 minutes 10, try going back to the factory charger to see if the phone will respond. Here's a couple links, one which is a video on how to create the cable, and the other is a link to XDA where they describe in detail have a cable is fashioned and operates.

The cable above can also be purchased online from various sources, including eBay, but you must make sure it says factory programming cable. Not factory data cable.

Another option is to bastardize a USB cable by cutting of the Micro USB cable connector on one end, and stripping the ends of the 2 power cable connections ( maybe red and black but don't take my word for it). Then open the case, remove the small rubber protector over the two terminals on the battery, and basically jumpstart the battery by directly connecting the stripped ends: of the USB power cable directly to the terminals on the battery, taking careful note of which one is positive (red) and which one is negative (black).

Doing this is the same thing is the cable mentioned above, and you wouldn't want to leave it connected for more than 30 minutes at a time just like described before then try the factory cable to see if you can get the phone to respond.

There has been limited success buy some who connect the power to the phone and try to cycle the phone in and out of recovery multiple times and then do the reboot option with in recovery. But if you can't get the phone to respond well connected to power cable, that's not likely to work.

So I bought an adaptor and I have it connected to the phone but still can't get it to turn on. How long does it need to be plugged in? Based on the description of the device it seems like it is supposed to be immediate right?

Not always. If the battery is completely drained it can take a while.

So I had it on there for 40min, nothing. Am I pretty much screwed? Last resort replace battery with one that is charged?

Just because you got nothing after 40 minutes, doesn't mean you're screwed.  Plug it into the stock charger and see if it responds.  If you get nothing after about 10-15 seconds, then go back to the adapter method and give it another 30 minutes or so.  Then rinse and repeat.

It may take several boosts before the battery is high enough in voltage to allow the charging circuit of the phone to fire up with the stock charger.  While the battery's voltage is too low, it will steal all the power and prevent the stock charger from firing up the charging mode on the phone.  Don't despair (yet).

By the way...what 'adapter' did you buy and how did you get it so quick>?  Are we talking about the Team Black Hat adapter (

), or something else?
