OTA updated to 4.4.2 --- switched to ART and frozen

Best Answer ayerges , 22 May 2014 - 04:43 AM

Thanks all for your suggestions. I finally worked with VZW support to get the phone into a factory reset. It was a different key combination sequence than anything I have seen published online. Once reset, KK came up fine and now I am rebuilding my apps and data.

I will definitely look forward to a root package for KK on this device when it comes out so I can better control my options as well as do a proper backup of my apps and data.

I am not rooted on this device. Standard VZW load. I got the OTA update for kitkat and installed it. That went pretty well but started to see battery issues especially when WIFI was enabled (connected or not). In one post, it indicated that switching to ART mode helped significantly. When I tried that and the phone rebooted upgrading the apps it would consistently hang during the process.

Forcing a reboot several times got all of the apps upgraded with the exception of the problem app. Now it sits at upgrading 1 of 1 forever. I can get into fastboot and connect to my computer but I see there is no FXZ that won't brick my phone at this point. I can also get into recovery and have tried to reset to factory with no change.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

ART has caused nothing but issues so far.  You might be able to start your phone in safe mode to isolate that app.  If not, you'll need to FXZ.  Sam has how-to in this section:

WHOOOAAAAA !!!! DON'T do that !  He has already updated to KK and is Locked.  That will brick him.  We don't have the FXZ for the HD 4.4.2 yet.

Xposed framework is  known entity that does not work with ART.  For others apps, see

In the link you posted item one gives the warning that if you have already taken the OTA update to KK, applying the FXZ will brick the phone.

Unless they key sequences have changed to get into safe mode, I am not able to get there. If there is a specific way to boot into safe mode after the KK update, please point me in the right direction.

If you turn the device off, then power on - as soon as you get the boot logo (not animation) press and hold the volume down.

I don't know if the software method still works where you press the power button to turn off then on the menu press and hold power off it would come up with a reboot to safemode screen and select ok.

That is what I have been trying. Since I never get to a powered on state, I can't shut down normally. The only way to reboot is holding the power and the volume down buttons until it restarts.

If I hold the volume down button down right after the "M" comes up, it just goes into the normal boot process and hangs optimizing application 1 of 1.

If I hold the volume down button before the "M" I get into fastboot mode.

Well, if an FDR and cache wipe in recovery doesn't clear it, I don't know what your option is at this point is until the FXZ is posted.

An FDR will work - b/c the stock apps are should be compatible with ART.  You can then go back to Dalvik if you like (or stick with ART), and reinstall all your apps 1 at a time, checking the link I posted earlier to make sure that any particular app is not on the list.

Than again, it is VZW, so....

Wiping the cache alone (particularly Dalvik cache) is not going to be useful as all that will do is have it try to optimize all of those apps again.  So, at this point, with you being locked and stocked, the only way out of this is probably going to be an FDR.

If you were unlocked, it's a whole different matter.  Flashable .ZIPs to enabling either ART or Dalvik exist to make thing s a bit easier.  Hope you have some sort of backup mechanism in place for your Apps and Data, if not, might want ot hold off for at least a little while until we have full confirmation that this is your only recourse (I cannot say definitely 100% as I don't have a RAZR device).

When you get to the "dead Andy" trying to go into recovery, you have to press and release both volume up and volume down. Then you get an additional menu to wipe cache or reset to Factory.
