I want to root my Razr M and need assistance as I've never rooted a phone before. Could someone link me a safe guide that I can use? My phone is that "Not for sale. Motorola Mobility Confidential Restricted Property" version and it apparently can't seem to detect any kitkat update(even though razr m has the update). So I'm going to root it and update it to kitkat. I'm not a noob per say, just that I haven't ever rooted a phone and have least bit knowledge about cellphones.

some details about my phone:
[System version]

98.16.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US

[Android version]

4.1.2

[Kernel version]

3.0.31 -ge491d6d

SMP PREEMPT Fri Apr 5 08:47:43 CDT 2013

[Build number]

9.8.1Q-66-1

[Build date]

Is that all?

By the way, can you explain the difference between rooting and unlocking? I also do not know if my phone is unlocked.

That's it.

Rooting allows apps to have administrative access to your phone (alter system files). Unlocking allows you to install unofficial firmwares (modified Android versions) onto your phone, and also custom recovery applications (Google TWRP or CWM). If you're not concerned with warranty, which you're more than likely out of anyway, just root and unlock now while you have the chance. Unlocking will not harm the device, and makes you able to never lose root. If you don't unlock now and an update releases, chances are you will never be able to again.

I just checked my phone by pressing the volume up + down + power button and selecting APfast boot. It says Device is UNLOCKED, Status Code: 1.

So I'm unlocked, right? I just need to root it?

I've never seen status code 1. Weird! Did you ever unlock with a different exploit?

Now this is an extremely noobish question so please bear with me. I have to follow the steps onwards from the "Downloads" heading, right? There is a link about for a build 183 which I think is not for me, is it?

And if you can please write down in steps what I have to do. I would be immensely grateful to you. I'm not in US and using a different network provider. I read a fellow's post(he's from my country) that once he had the same cellphone and when he updated to kitkat he could not connect to his network, no matter what he tried.

I can't help with your model. It may not contain the same security hole as the US models. And flashing the wrong FXZ can permanently brick it. If you can safely get to KitKat and root, try running the unlock and see if it works.

But this IS the US version, isn't it? It is Verizon but I'm using it on a different network.

Then why isn't build 183 for you? Listen I'm on vacation right now so you'll have to do some reading to figure out what you need to do. Basically you have to upgrade to KitKat, root, unlock, either deal with your carrier issue on kitkat if possible, or use my script generator to downgrade back to 9.30.1 if the carrier thing can't be done on kitkat. Either way, I can't really do much for you this week as I'm at a beach house with no pc.

Under about phone, what system version does it say? See attached to see the screen I mean. Even just screenshot it and post it.

Don't update. That system version was the one that could be initially unlocked. Root, unlock with Motopocalypse, then update if you want.

Yes, you could update, root , and unlock, in that order. The end result could be the same, just depends on how you want to do it.

Correct. Root unlock now. Worry about whether to upgrade or not later.
