My Razr M (98.18.94.XT907 has never been rooted.  When the OTA upgrade to Kitkat was pushed I began receiving it and trying to install, but it failed numerous times.  I finally reset the phone to factory and wiped all data and did the minimum setup (no accounts).

The OTA upgrade still downloads successfully but gets only about 40 percent through the install and fails.

I'm timid about rooting but am willing to try just about anything at this point. The constant upgrade reminders (and the periodic downloads) are beginning to drive me nuts.

I've finally decided to take your advice and RSD the phone. This is my first time through this territory so I'm going cautiously.

RSD Lite 6.1.6 and Java 1.7 are installed.  I run RSDscriptGenerator.jar and point it toward VZW_XT907_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml.zip.  The script generator shows a button saying "generate scripts" but the instructions on the link you sent say nothing about clicking it.  Instead they say to put the phone in AP Fastboot mode connect it to the PC and select KEEP DATA.  That's all.

Before I get anywhere near flashing the phone I want to make sure that the last steps are correct.  I'm assuming I should not push the generate script button before connecting the phone.  Should I push it after connecting the phone?

Thanks for any advice you might have!

You're using the wrong program. Read the OP of the thread he linked to.

Thanks.  I have no idea how that happened.  Obviously I should be running RSDFlasher.jar.

I'm beginning to think I'm all thumbs (or worse).

I run RSDFlasher.jar.  Point it to sdl.exe.

It comes back with a dialog looking for Files of Type "FXZ XML Script".

I point it toward VZW_XT907_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml.zip and click open.

It asks me where I want to extract the files.

I point toward a directory I created "FXZ_XT907" and click open.

I'm left with a blank window with "RSD Flasher 1.5" in its title bar.  No messages, no sign of activity.  The folder FXZ_XT907 remains empty.

Clearly I am doing something very wrong.

Make sure there's no space in the path.

I'm running RSDFlasher.jar from the directory "\Users\John\Desktop\Kitkat_stuff\".  The target directory for extraction is a subdirectory (RXZ_XT907) of that directory.  No spaces anywhere.

First, I don't know if you have ()'s in the actual folder name.  I doubt that's good.  Second, upgrade to RSD Flasher 1.6 and run it again.  And finally, I don't know why people don't try extracting the zip file manually and pointing RSD Flasher to the extracted xml file when they run into trouble, but, it would seem like a good idea to me.

The () are not in the folder name.  I had already tried to extract the files from the zip but it spit out an "unspecified error" when extracting system.img.  Don't know if that file is important to the process, but I didn't want to risk it.  I just tried RSD Flasher 1.6, but it also failed to extract the files and left me with a blank window..

Well that means your zip file is corrupt. Fix it.

You were right.  Zip was currupt.  Got new zip, unzipped it. Ran RSD Flasher.  Pointed it to the XML file.  It gave me the three flashing choices (yes!).  I put phone in FastBoot mode.  Attached it by USB.  Pushed Flash and Save Data.

Woops.  Got: UH OH  Cannot run program "cmd" in directory C:\users\John\Desktop\Kitkat_stuff\[... and so on]  Create Process error=5.  Access is denied.

I admit these files a buried several layers deep in the directory structure.  I'm tempted to move everything to C: root and try again.  Not sure though.  Is there an alternate way to do this manually using USDLite?

Of course you can do it manually through RSD Lite.  The script is created in your extracted FXZ directory, so, load RSD manually, open that script, and flash it.

Am I right in assuming that if I point RSD Lite at the XML file the flash will leave data in place?

If you open the KEEP-DATA.xml script that was created in your FXZ folder, yes, it will do exactly that.  That's what I was telling you to do in the previous post.

For some reason RSD Flasher was not creating the scripts.  Rather than figure out what was going wrong with that  I just threw in the towel and did a straight flash to 4.4 with RSD Lite.  Lost all my data, of course, but at least now I'm running KitKat and don't have the constant stream of update notices.

I really appreciate all the advice.  It helped get me through it.
