Try this:1.Wipe- everything except internal and external SD.
2.Mount- system, data, cache. Make sure all 3 are checked.
3.Install- flash ROM and gapps.
4.Reboot-Wait 10-15min max.

I followed this video: to install twrp. Rootjunky didn't have a twrp compatible with kitkat in his download links so I went ahead and downloaded 2.7.1.0 here:

As far as everyone else's comments, I will download the latest nightly from the cm website that I linked in a previous post and flash that along with most up to date gapps tonight. This time around I'll let the phone site around for 30 minutes or so and see if anything new happens.

If the logo stays around and it doesn't look like the install went well, I'll probably end up going back to stock KK and restart the process... :(

In TWRP 2.7.1.0, mount system is not checked by default. He needs to make sure that it is selected before flashing a ROM.

The system doesn't need to be manually mounted when flashing source built ROM's. That is actually only have to do with Stock built ROM's since there updater binary isn't built or used correctly..

Yeah, that's definitely the correct recovery.  Not really sure what's going on, but a clean slate will solve it, sucks, I know.

I just did a wipe data/factory reset, flashed CM11 and Gapps and it worked fine, it just takes a REALLY long time on the motorola logo, make sure you're flashing a nightly though

I finally got around to flashing a nightly from the cm website that I posted in a previous post as well as the gapps zip file. I followed the steps exact as described by ibolski and eventually got the successfully completed message. Wiped the dalvik / cache and rebooted. I gave the motorola logo / dual core technology boot screen about 45 minutes until I decided that was long enough and something was clearly still wrong. Rebooted into recovery and went to restore from my backup. Shortly after hitting restore, a "Failed" message is displayed.

I tried a few more times to restore from my sdcard backup with no luck and only seeing the "Failed" message. Even with a dalvik and cache wipe, nothing. I thought to myself, now I can't even restore so something is clearly messed up with a system file or something. I was heading out to dinner soon so I decided to try installing the nightly one last time with a phone that won't even let me restore a backup. This time I decided to only select the nightly zip instead of the nightly zip and the gapps zip. I don't know why I selected only the nightly instead of both zips because nothing happened when I previously tried this, but later I'd realize that I was glad that I did. Wiped, installed, wiped dalvik / cache and rebooted. I headed out to dinner with the phone just sitting in the moto logo screen pretty disappointed. I returned about an hour and a half later to find the Cyanogenmod welcome screen! WTF!?!?!?!

I couldn't believe it. I don't know what happened but it finally worked! Shortly after, I realized that I needed the gapps zip to be installed so I went back and installed that without a problem.  CM seems to be pretty awesome so Im really glad that it works now. I must say that I was pretty frustrated, and was about to throw in the towel to go back to stock KK to start from a fresh start. Really glad that I don't have to go through all of that.

Still not sure what went wrong, but I'd say it was either a time issue (even though I let it sit on the logo for 45 mins) or twrp didn't like installing the two zips at the same time. Anyways, thanks for all of the help everyone!  :)

TL;DR Finally got cm11 to install :D

Glad you got it fixed. I myself flash both CM11 and GAPPs via TWRP and haven't had an issue. Might be something with your phone then.

45 minutes is a long time to have to wait and that seems to point to an issue with the hardware itself, but I can't say for sure. For me, flashing and rebooting was a snap and it completed in less than 5 minutes, so I'm not sure what is going on with your phone. If you're having all sorts of issues restoring, then I'm about ready to say it could even be your sd card.

When you say SD card, is that the external SD card? If so, you might want to try putting the images on the internal memory SD card and flash it from there and see if that makes a difference.

How old is your external SD card? Do you write to it a lot? It could be failing. SD cards have a limited life-span and the more you write to it, the quicker they will eventually fail. I use to swap and make the external SD card the internal SD card on other phones and I found they would start to fail in less than a year. This was due to apps constantly writing to them.

Now, I just use it store my music, do weekly TiBu backups (used to do them nightly, not anymore), and my pictures from my camera. The SD card I have now has lasted well over a year now.

Yea I had my backup on the external SD card. Once I get all of the apps, music, photos, etc set up, I'll try backing up to the internal SD card. I hate to say it but the external SD card I have been using is probably upwards of three years old. I've had it at least since I got the phone, so almost two years now, but I think I was using the same SD card on my previous phone so three is very likely. I know that I don't use it very much in terms of having apps write data to the external SD card, but new ones are cheap enough and easier to buy than going through the headache of not being able to restore.

Good to know that I can make a backup on the internal memory. Should I have the backup saved in a sub folder on the internal or does that not really matter?

Thanks!

Just save it to the internal storage in a subdirectory as you would on your external. Depending on how much space you have, you may or may not be able to save it there.

Also, remember if you do a full factory data reset, your internal storage gets wiped, so I would suggest before doing an FDR the next time, copy the backup down to your PC if you don't want to write to your external SD.

Also, with what you've said about your external SD being over 3 years old, it might be going bad depending on how much writing you've done to do it over the past three years. You might want to do a chkdsk on it via Windows to see if comes up with any issues. You might want to look at getting a newer SD card and in the meantime, I would probably back it up to your PC just in case. I've had it where it went bad and I lost files due to the bad SD card.

Better safe than sorry. I'll order one soon.

On a somewhat separate note, I noticed that the gapps camera that I flashed no longer has HDR. Is there a way to get this feature back?

No. That was only in the Moto camera. You could attempt to install the Moto camera. Not sure how well it would work. Someone would have to extract it from the KK release and make the APKs available. You would have to also install the Moto gallery I believe. Not sure what else it might require.

Basically, you would use something like root explorer to enable writing to the /system partition and then you would copy the two APKs to the /system/app directory. Then, reboot the phone and if it works correctly, you should see the stock camera and gallery icons in your app drawer. If they launch and work correctly, you're golden.

I did this under JB, but that was done with a ROM that was stock-based, not AOSP-based, like CM11. I highly doubt it would work without some major work.

when it comes to the moto camera one would be better off making a updater zip since not only the multible apks are needed but also a handful of libs as well so it would work properly.

And that's what I figured would happen. I know in the past, I got it to work on a custom ROM, but the ROM was based off of JB Stock. It wasn't AOSP-based, so in that case, we could just copy the apks to the system/app directory and reboot and it worked. I figured under CM11, it's an entirely different beast.

Hmm seems a bit out of my league. I tried downloading Google Camera from the play store because I saw that has HDR compatibility for "select" devices. Doesn't seem like our device is supported :/

I was reading that a modified Gapps zip compiled by Paranoid Android may have included HDR with the Google Camera app. Would this work instead of having the Google Camera app installed through the play store? Otherwise, are most people just not using HDR / or are using a third party app?
