It's pretty widely known about the $100 deductible for insurance. Regardless of if the Big V rep told you, it's clearly stated on the paperwork you receive after starting insurance.
Of course the usefulness fluctuates depending on model and age of your phone the same way having comp and collision is useful on a newer car but not so much on a beater. I have a teenage daughter that is prone to dropping her phone so it was a good fit for me. To each their own.
I would say you have a hardware issue on your M. If you can live with it a bit longer I'd wait for the new Moto X+1. If not maybe go the ebay/swappa thing for a cheap phone that can get you through...

I got the X, love it. However, haven't flashed anything - so it won't satisfy your addiction.
