What ya do tear it apart to disconnect the battery???? Dont ya know that the screen still works its just knowing were to touch... Also to replicate a battery pull one just holds down volume + , volume - and power button for 20 secs. The device will reboot..

Nobe,

I did all of that but there was NO RESPONSE.  I've learned a lot from here but believe me when I tell you that my phone would NOT RESPOND.  There was an initial response when  I booted into Recovery.  It vibrated once after the reboot but nothing after that.  I tried for over 30 minutes.  And no I didn't tear it apart.  I just removed the 2 screws at the bottom, slit the screen up, removed the tape from the battery connector and disconnected the battery, reconnected the battery.  Then I was able to reboot back into bootloader and reinstall 2.7.1.0.

I couldn't see any other way.  2.8 just wan't work for me for some reason.  Go figure.

OK.  I tried it again.  This time I disabled screen time out while I was in 2.7.1.0.  Then I did all of the stuff listed

. Then I installed 2.8.0.0.  So far so good.  I've booted into it a couple of times and I'm not getting the black screen.  I had to re-load all of my apps but that's ok.  Just takes a little while.  Now I've got to work on another issue loading

.  I will get there.  Just gonna take some trial and error.  Thanks for all of the help.

Gotta a sure fire fix for this issue. What was originally causing this was the MTP addons in the source, one commit where MTP was enabled on bootup creating conflicks. Update will soon be added in the OP so this will not happen.

So it's not possible to have MTP enabled since it was what was causing the black screens? Too bad, it was a cool feature. But I'd rather have a working recovery lol. :p

No MTP works perfectly fine. Just didnt play well when it was enabled on boot. Y ou can still use that feature without issues.

Oh, I'm an idiot. Didn't see the enable MTP option in the mount options.

Thanks for posting the updated version! :)

Make sure I get this right. I have 2.8twrp installed. I need to restore to default settings. Then reflash 2.8 twrp right?

Correct. Just to be safe on the twrp settings. After you get done flashing the new TWRP reboot recovery the restore defaults again... Then you will be golden.

I cannot backup to sdcard. I could in 2.7.1.0. It creates the folder, and says backup successful, and shows the files from twrp file manager. But after I reboot to system, they are gone, and then gone in twrp also. And the date still shows 2017, February. What did I do wrong?

Edit: i just noticed my ext sdcard is exfat format. Should I reformat as ext4.

Also, I used flashify to flash recovery over 2.7.1.0, could that be the problem with date?

Never used flashify but i dont have this date issue. I created both fastboot image and a recovery installer for it to install. May wanna try again. I always made backups on external storage without issues. Exfat is what the format should be. make sure that your external is set as defaut. Those backups are probably located on internal.

I used Flashify to install 2.8 and I did get the date issue back. I can still backup to my external SD card though. Just FYI.

I dont use Flashify, but flashed in TWRP 2.7.1.0 up to 2.8.1.0 and have no issues either.

I'll fastboot flash it and see what happens. I'm sure flashify is the problem.

If you currently have a custom recovery installed. That zip can be used to flash the updated TWRP to your device through any other custom recovery.
