Obtaining root will start with flashing a custom recovery. Root will be flashed from there. Being unlocked, you have almost no concern taking ota's - just have to remember that more often than not, if you are rooted it will fail these days. Also if you've disabled any stock apps, it will likely fail as well. Any way, that's behind you, just flash a recovery and boot immediately into it. Boring onto system from there should prompt for restoring root. It may be necessary to install again the supersu app from there.

Well, my opportunity to install custom recovery is now almost over. It is night here and tomorrow early morning I need to leave from here. So, perhaps I won't be able to spend time on this.

What I discovered so far is that I need to put TWRP from here:

Now,

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery ]TWRP2710-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.img

I was not sure if the ] in the second command is valid. So, I did not proceed.

Yes, that is the correct recovery. The second command is correct: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (recovery.img will be whatever the name of the recovery you are flashing is).

edit: ninja'd, and pay attention to what CMH posted. ;)

On 2nd October, I had upgraded my dad's XT926 to 4.4.2 by taking the OTA. Now, today, after 1 month, my dad informed me that he is no longer able to connect to the home WiFi. He simply cannot see the network. He can see our neighbor's network (though he cannot connect, since he does not have the password to that).

We have tried everything (I am at a remote location) over phone - changing encryption settings on the router, wireless mode on the router, disabling smart actions on the phone, forgetting saved networks on the mobile, manually adding SSID and trying to connect, disabling bluetooth and trying, etc.

Now, the only option remaining is a factory reset.

The phone is unlocked and no bloatware has been deleted. The phone is not currently rooted.

Is factory reset going to complicate things and result in any bootloops?

The new update is just terrible battery life is horrible less than a day and also you cannot write to your SD card any longer a factory reset will probably fix your wifi but I'm sure your going back to 4.1 2
Do it now you may not be able to later

After going back to 4.1. 2 I can again load my pictures and videos on to my sd card and all my apps can run from the SD card. Battery life is back to normal. 3 days or so.

@snowman: What is the easiest way to go back to 4.1.2? I am at a remote location and cannot physically access the device - so I am kinda limited in terms of offering support to my dad to downgrade.
