I'm thinking about getting a Dev edition (with intentions of unlocking the bootloader, of course). Is there a straight forward way to gain root access (or does it happend automatically w/ the bootloader unlocking)? Or does one simply use one of the methods that also works in the retail version?

All you'll have to do is unlock the bootloader. Flash a custom recovery and then finally flash a su.zip. It is easier then rooting a retail device. I am moving this also.
