Because it is not the final version. Someone basically pushed the wrong button at the wrong time. Oops. Now we have a leak

So how would we go about upgrading to the JB kernel?

Perhaps you should learn the difference between a kernel and a ROM. As the pictures of the Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean install below show, the kernel between Verizon's ICS and JB hasn't changed.

VZW JB OTA Update

You want to upgrade to JB, the instructions are on the first page, if you have any further questions or (education matters) on how or what is changed then perhaps you should start your own topic, this is a simple instructions topic, nothing more nothing less..

VZW JB OTA Update

Bobo I explained it to you in the chatroom. Sorry if its over your head. Insulting Satman will get you no where and even less help next time.

The JB leak from VZW is an early version we believe as it is based on the ICS kernel numbering scheme. We expect it to change when its official.

If you dont like the answers you get here, then maybe you shouldnt ask and regardless, you shouldnt complain....

Guys, its obvious that the kernels are different. The way the dual boot utility works is that it flashes the leaked OTA's kernel, and then you boot straight into Safestrap to flash a JB "kernel" rom. If you were to try anything else, you would black screen. Now, if you flashed the OTA, and therefore flashed the OTA bootloader, then no, youre SOL, as the newer bootloader will not allow you to flip flop between the two kernels. Or to make things simpler the "boot.img". Now, If everyone understands, GREAT. If not, sorry. Read a little more, don't know what else to say. I will just say this. IF you took the FULL OTA, there is NO GOING BACK TO ICS. EVER. If you didn't flash the OTA, you can flash the JB boot.img willy nilly via fastboot and boot JB based roms. And if you so choose, you can flash the ICS boot.img back and then flash ICS kernel based roms. Are we all clear?

Apologies to all. I was surprised that the kernel hadn't changed between ICS and JB, meanwhile this site has an entire section for ROMS requiring the JB kernel. I perceived the quick one line response telling me to reread the OP, which never mentions the word kernel, as disrespectful and replied accordingly while providing screenshots further explaining my confusion. I also didn't realize it was satman80 who told me to reread the OP. In hindsight I realize I should've just started a new topic in the Help section.

Apology accepted here, cant speak for the Satman.

The JB leak is based on ICS and the kernel numbers havent changed, however they are different enough that if you update to the OTA you CANNOT go back to ICS. Whether this was a mistake as some feel or a planned early leak to test, who really knows. What I can say for myself, JB is better even in the state we have it. Hoping an "official" release will be even better.

In the ROM section we have JB based ROM's for ICS and JB ROM's for JB. The ICS ones give you an idea of how JB looks and feels but isnt as there as the ROMS made for JB. And also not sure how much development anyone wants to put into the ones for ICS. Most specifically you dont get the updated radios.

VZW did make it confusing :)

So it's the same one we used on ICS? that's what was confusing me. If so, that's cool, I already have it then.

How do I "disable" safestrap before installing it? Is this merely going into the Safestrap app and selecting "uninstall"?
