LAST UPDATE: 183.46.15 is pushing out to the HD and M as we speak.  As promised, I have now closed this thread and will no longer be providing unlock/root support.  DO NOT PM ME.  The information here will work if you're still on build 183.46.10 (yes, 182.46.10 works, as well).  Follow along to unlock.  If you encounter an issue, read the thread.  There's very little chance that someone else hasn't encountered it and had it fixed at this point.  If you are on a build above 183.46.10, this thread DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU SO DON'T BOTHER.  Thanks, everyone!

WARNING: I can't stress this enough....if you care at all about root, UNLOCK NOW.  Period.  Do not debate.  Just do it.

On to the good stuff....

This WILL work on the HD and the M with 182 or 183!!  Congrats and please consider donating to geohot for this fine exploit!

IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you used my UNIVERSAL script to update to build 183, the TZ partition was NOT flashed and you should use the following to fix your device BEFORE doing the root/unlock procedure below.

If you need to upgrade to, or fix, build 183, follow the appropriate instructions here:

If you're having problems with the motoapocalypse apk or just want to run the exploit from your pc, here's an updated motoapocalypse zip that contains the latest adb and fastboot.  That is the only change I made to Dan's original motoapocalypse zip file:

Instructions:

o) Install

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

from the playstore

o) Install the Towel Root exploit from the link above (click on the lambda symbol in the middle of the page).  It's an apk, so you must have unknown sources enabled.

o) Run the Towel root app and install root....wait for the reboot after 15 seconds

o) Open SuperSU and allow it to update the su binary

o) Install the motoapocalypse apk from the unlock link above.  Run it.

o) Optionally install TWRP or CWM custom recovery. See below for links

o) ???

o) PROFIT

Q: Wait, WTF?  The TZ partition security hole that allowed unlock was patched in 9.20.1.  HTF is this working???

A: "Someone" at Moto "accidentally" used the vulnerable TZ partition code in the 182/183 kitkat builds.  WOOPSIE!   ;)

Q: I'm too lazy to be bothered to search...you must provide me a link to CWM and TWRP that I can use after following these directions.

A: Um, that's not a question and that's pretty pathetic.  Nonetheless, I'm apparently here to serve.

Q: Ok, I have the img file for my chosen recovery, but, uhhhh, how do I flash it?

A: Seriously, no one searches anymore?  LMAO.  Use

 or follow

.

Q: I have questions about what ROMS I can use now.

A: Read this thread and post your questions there:

It's actually kind of amusing if you think about it. People complain that Dev Edition phones are too expensive but then drop a few hundred bucks on a bounty for one specific version of Android. There's no irony at all. ;) Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

Agreed ! You would think if something like root or being able to flash roms was a big deal to somone they would either invest the time into reserching if such things are possiable with thier devices or spending a couple extra bucks on a developer device instead of wishful thinking bounties that rarely pan out. I understand that bounties made sense before dev models were availiable but today its just silly ! I would never buy a device that didnt suit my current wants/needs and then hoping that a solution eventually happend ......

Does fox if work on this phone with kit kat? I don't really need root if so and would unfreeze the updater.

Foxfi on 4.4.2 has been problematic. They only have it working on a few devices ATM.

New 4.4.2 root exploit released for the X.  I know someone is trying it on the HD right now to see if it works.  I'm sure we'll know later today.

So our resident tester for this informs me that he was not able to get root on the HD with build 183 and the new X 4.4.2 exploit.  Bummer.

That's a shame, but it looked like a PITA. Any time you wanted root, you had to tether to your PC and push the files to your phone. In other words, if you were out in the wild and needed root but didn't have a PC with you, forget it. Also, no write access to system.

But, i guess that was better than nothing.
