Not for OG Razr/Maxx XT-912

So, a user by the name of radiohead7778580 over at XDA a few months ago, figured out a way to flash new radio firmware in RSD Lite that will allow RAZR HD users to bypass the "No US GSM" network block. This hack allows users of the RAZR HD/MAXX to use US GSM networks (T-Mobile and AT&T). Although it's not a late-breaking development, he's been working hard improving this modification and we want you all to have the information necessary to accomplish this if you so choose. Keep in mind, you do need an active T-Mobile or AT&T Sim card for this to work.

As usual, we're not responsible for any damage caused to your phone. You know the deal. There are, however, a few things to note:

1- Speed : Speeds from doing this process are, well, not what you would get if you had an actual AT&T/T-Mobile device. Users are reporting speeds in the 3G/HSPA+ range with a few users seeing AT&T LTE speeds briefly. So, in short, you won't see the blazing speeds that you would see if you were actually using a phone from those carriers. May not matter to some, but worth mentioning. A lot of your speed will be dependent on if you are in a 1900Mhz "refarmed" area which means the old 1900Mhz band has been repurposed for use with HSPA+. If this is the case, you may have some trouble picking up the HSPA+ signal versus someone who is on a non-farmed HSPA+ signal area. Most people are flirting between Edge, H, H+ and 3G.

2- There are 2 versions : There are 2 versions of this software: Wipe and Non-Wipe. Self-explanatory, the wipe version will wipe the data on your phone whereas the non wipe wont.

Installation:
Download the appropriate version (Wipe/No Wipe)
Open up RSD Lite
Ensure your phone is in AP Fastboot mode and you have the current moto drivers installed.
Connect the phone to your computer.
In RSD Lite, navigate to the zip file you downloaded and select it.
Click "Start" and wait for RSD Lite to flash the radio.
Once the phone boots navigate to Settings -> Mobile Networks and change the Network Type to GSM/UMTS
At the bottom of the page, search for networks and select "MARITIME 3G"

Tips:
Performing these 2 build.prop edits make make the transition smoother. One turns LTE off, the other sets the default network to GSM

Also, some users were met with an "Unknown Sim error". Many were fixed by removing /system/app/VZWPhoneService.apk and /system/app/VZWPhoneService.odex.

So, have any of you given this a try? Thinking about it? Let us know how it works!

I can confirm it works with both T-Mobile and AT&T... Speed you get will depend on the network in your area. I personally had better chances grabbing H+ on AT&T in my area which yielded roughly 5meg down 1-2meg up speeds. While not LTE it would be plenty for the average user. On the Droid DNA you can accomplish the same without even flashing a different radio! However I will add that if youre interested in trying this on the HD or M... I do believe there is another option in the works that does not require flashing the radio. There's nothing better then knowing you're not locked to a carrier just because of the device you have!!!

There is a radio hack on XDA for the M that apparently works on the HD as well. I noticed this after I had sold my Maxx HD and purchased the N4 :(

The Aussie radio flash let my phone work on T-Mobile but even in heavy HSPA +42 I was still getting alot of edge network. This radio hack seems to work much better. As I said, I have nothing to test it on so maybe someone here can give it a whirl and see how well it works...

I been using the radio hack (NV edit) in the link above since it came out a month ago, and have been enjoying H+ on T-Mobile in south florida (refarmed area). I used the aussie radio before and got Edge only. I highly recommend the NV edit in the link in the post above over using the aussie radio. It's worth it!!

Just get you an XT910 and be done with it. I have been trying to get the XT912 to work for months with no avail, so i got me a mainboard from an XT910 and problem solved, only big issue is the XT910 is a 3G not a 4G or LTE phone so there is that, but personally when I do need data it works on H+ well enough for me.

So can anyone confirm that this will work on the RAZR MAXX HD?  I am wanting to get one, but I'm with T-Mobile right now and want to make sure that I can use my current SIM card in the phone and that I will be able to get the best speed possible from their network.  In addition, I often travel and work in both USA and Canada, and it would be nice to be able to use it in Canada as well (I have a Bell Mobility SIM card for Canada).

Any chance this will work on the Bionic? Would it do anything different than the RadioComm hack?

I've done the RadioComm hack and while I get really good data speeds my voice reception isn't nearly as good as with my Captivate Glide, with the same sim, in the same places.

Thanks.

Title = DROID RAZR HD/MAXX/M - Working on US-GSM Carriers

Buried Content = 'does not work on XT912'

Aren't the vast majority of US-based Razr Maxx devices an XT912 model?

Can someone fix the title or OP before someone wastes their time or screws up their phone?

If I lived . I'd be ~ by now.

I did not really find the title misleading. I read it as the Razr HD and Maxx version of the HD however I did edit the OP to prevent confusion. Thanks for the head up.

I can't get this to flash. I've followed the steps and it fails every time.

On the phone screen it says something about a downgrade and says failed every time.

Someone have any idea?

and had never seen a Verizon phone before !   :)

That's how the phone is set up.  We in the US have GSM networks but the phones won't work on them.  GSM does work for us when in a foreign country however.  So, since  you're in India and not in the US, it works for you.  :)

Since this does not work for the Razr Maxx (which I purchased back in May 2012 but only used about 3 months), is there a similar procedure to unlock my phone so that I can use it on AT&T ... I had to switch to this mobile carrier last year because they are the only carrier that has good service in my new home.  I am currently using an IPhone and I just HATE it and want to return to using my Razr Maxx if I can .....

Thanks for your help and input!

Yes you can unlock  the Maxx HD, I have Verizon Maxx HD phone, and  have used it on ATT, and on T Mobile no problems.

unlocked and no contract !   :)
