You can use Voodoo PTA root keeper to safe and then restore root. People have been successful doing this. If for some reason it does not work you will not ba able to root til there is a new method. Going back to ICS will not be possible any more.
I've used Root Keeper successfully on two different Razr HDs now going from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 and even gone back from 4.1.1 to ICS. The question is can I use it to keep root going from 4.1.1->4.1.2 and if needed can I still restore to ICS from 4.1.2?

I used voodoo successfully as well on my HD, although unnecessary since I have a dev edition. Just did it for practice when we finally get our update on the Bionic.....You can use Voodoo PTA root keeper to safe and then restore root. People have been successful doing this. Yes you can use it. No you cannot go back to ICS

Basically this. However, I highly suggest doing your root during ICS and restoring it once you hit JB 4.1.1 to test and make sure it works properly. If for some reason your OTA rootkeeper isn't protecting it properly you won't be able to roll back from 4.1.2 to try again.

Also, with taking this update what error messages are being received? How many attempts to retry this update have some taken?

Ok just to let everyone know, I was able to restore my phone back to stock after taking the update to 4.1.2 using the RazrHD utility 1.10 .
Can you elaborate on this?

My phone(Razr HD XT926 Verizon US Non dev.) was on 4.1.1 rooted and I took the ota by going to my stock rom slot and using OTA root keeper temp unrooted. Accepted the update then restored root afterwards. SS 3.12 was not working though, so I had to uninstall and reinstall it. Was running it all day then decided to try using the RazrHD utitlity 1.10 to restore back to stock ICS 4.0.4. Did step one and it worked. Rerooted now, and currently DL JB leak OTA to go back to 4.1.1 . I had some problems with switching from Mobile data to wifi on 4.1.2 ..

GmsCore is the google play services and I've never done anything to that. Anyone have any thoughts?

All I did was activate my stock slot, deleted any other ROM slots and restored a backup of stock jb 4.1.1 I made a week ago with all apps installed/updated. Booted up and temp unrooted, accepted the update and it worked.
Not sure what's going on but if you still have a problem and want to try this update it may be easier and/or faster just to start fresh by using the razrhd utility and growing back to ICS and re root and update...

Well I went ahead and did the temp-unroot and when I tried to apply the update it failed the apply_patch_check on GmsCore.apk and the install aborted.

Doing it to me too. Can we pull gmscore.apk out of the last ota and install it manually?

you think there could be a difference in the update packages?dl package was supplied by moto endI have to ask, this may seem silly, but of those of you that are ROOTED and have updated to 4.1.2, who has taken the update via OTA and who has taken the update via the Droid Life links?
