Doing this shouldn't be giving you a bunch of popups and redirects in winblows.....

No, none of this is causing the popups or redirects.
Ok, that worked. No sticky problem. Phone seems to be all right now. THANK YOU!
Now, i'm getting an 'Install system update' when the phone comes on.
Should I take that or not?
"About" tells me System Version is 183.46.10 XT926 Verizon.en.US
Android Version is 4.4.2
Also, any ideas on why the sim card is not being recognized or should I start a new topic here or elsewhere?

No don't take the update. root and unlock. Then if you want to upgrade you can flash the .15 which is what the ota is. Well the ota will take you to .14 then another ota will popup and want to take you to .15. You are pretty much finished with ota updates when you unlock because there is no need for them you can easily flash an fxz to put you to the newest version.

Sim card problem still the same.
Set it up as a wifi phone so I at least have a phone of some sort.
Where are good instructions for installing CWM or TWRP?

to make it easy rename it to recovery.img .... Copy it to your fast boot directory (same place you ran the commands to clear the sticky bit error)..... Open terminal (command ) and invoke this command..... fastboot flash recovery recovery.img .... Hit enter..... Unplug phobe and Power off..... Then boot straight into recovery (via the 3 button method)

Something isn't working.... probably me.
Get error message: (bootloader) Variable not supported!
By three button method you mean:
Hold down Volume up + Volume down together, then Power.
The phone boots up normal and there is no TWRP.
Searched the error message.
Went to XDA-developers and tried a few things. Nothing worked.

Yes, it flashes.
After the three button method,
Select recovery,
Press Volume up,
Red logo appears,
Nothing happens for a long time,
Then it boots up normal.
No sign of TWRP.

on AP Fastboot screen:
Device is unlocked: Status Code:3
Unplug from PC,
Turn off phone, ? How long should the power button be held to make sure the phone turns off. I held it momentarily then a long time.
Three button method,
Select recovery as quickly as possible,
Press Volume up.
Red logo appears.
Reboot normal after some time.
I've tried running as adminstrator and user. No difference.

What exactly is the output in terminal when you invoke the command
Do not understand?
Do you mean after entering: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img?

I'll have to enter it by typing:
C:\Users\dlw\cmimstaller\resources\tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
target reported max download size of 31457280 bytes
sending 'recovery' <8010 KB>...
OKAY [ 0.640s ]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 2.122s ]
finished. total time: 2.761s
