Im new to learning about rooting and what not on my phone. I had it rooted before my phone updated and now the root seems to have been lost. I've been trying to figure out how to re-root it but I keep getting errors. I know I'm doing something wrong...I just need to know what. This is the error..

I'd recommend trying out my utility to root it then. Use it to go to stock 6.11.748, update normally to 173, then use it to root and you will be error free. Also wipe data/factory reset before rooting with my utility.

The phone updated without your permission? Is this preventable?

Is there a link for your tool? I really hate to be a bother but I like the options I have with my phone being rooted. Lol

Both of my phones asked to update, it was not automatic.

Hi Matt,
I'm looking to root for the first time and curious what the "wipe data/fatcory reset" clears?
will I lose all my 3rd party apps, contacts etc.?
Also I must be on .173 to root or can I root on .176?
Thanks
Tim

Accidentally installed 6.12.173 and lost root. Was able to get it back today thanks to your link. I'm lost on how this works, but keep it simple for my kind. Thank you so much!

I think we need to pay this guy to unlock the Moto Bootloader. Some one should contact him and we should start a fund for that!

I'll donate $500 to that. A little less what I paid for my GSM Droid Razr.

So I did the OTA without unrooting and it seems to be working fine.......but I cant get the Eclipse rom to take. Do I need to unroot? then root again using your tool? Or is it too late since I' did the OTA?

Ran root check figured out that it did unroot. Moving forward will give this another shot now!

Tried Dan's method (which may have been replaced by now for all i know), unable to proceed past "waiting for device" - all setting are correct, motofail extracted in full to desktop amd untouched, attempting to root a stock XT912... you know the black and *cough* red one *cough*

any advice would be happily snacked on.

I've used motofail on numerous Razrs and a Droid 4 over the last few months. Yesterday I attempted to root a D4 and it failed. Last night and this morning I tried a Razr and it failed. I'm at a loss to know what is going wrong. I'll copy/paste the info from cmd prompt in hopes that someone can help me out.

Even though no one responded, I decided to come back here and give a report in case someone has the same problem later and I want to help in any way I can.
I ended up copying five files from the Motofail folder: busybox, motofail, run.bat, su and Superuser.apk to my Android-sdk\platform-tools\ folder. I then ran run.bat as an Adminstrator and everything went off without a hitch. Yay!!!
But please, can someone tell me why it worked. I would really like to use this as a learning experience because I just spent a frustrating 8 hours or so fussing with this.
Thanks guys!

My guess is you don't have USB debugging enabled. Also, you should probably be in Charge Only mode.
