Hello all. I am thinking about getting a
The lap dock 500 pro. Found refurbished ones on eBay for $99 free shipping. How is the JB and custom ROMs when using the lap dock? Does anyone know tweaks you can do to the lap dock? What I am going to use it for. Searching the web, surffing the web, stream movies, stream videos, watch movies from my phone SD card, download stuff, listen to music, and tweak things. Canon you connect a external HDD and mouse? One big thing too is I do not have TV or internet other than my phone. December will be 3 years without. So, football is around the corner. YES! With the NFL mobile apk, does it work/stream the games? You cannot do that when you HDMI your phone to your TV. Also, how is the screen resolution with movies and videos? Also being able to bring it anywhere is nice. O and one big big thing, does the phone still get hot when using it? I can tether my 4G but phone gets hot when using it on my laptop. Desktop I put my phone on the fan and keeps it cool. I have Xbox cooling fans I been thinking of making a box and having my phone sit on it to keep it cool. I am reaching deep into the community on this one. Thank you for who ever reads and responds.
Thank you,

Here's a bionic user, who loves his lapdock. Some find it disappointing, others love it it'll depend. It's nice if you don't have a tablet. It's good for movies/netflix, and yes you can use external mice (mice? Mouses?) And some hard drives. I have a few external hdds, one in particular is very picky about what USB ports it'll like, it's in issue about not getting enough power from some ports. My lapdock won't power it, but it will power others. Web browsing isn't awesome, but not terrible. Scrolling is hard on the wrist, since you have to "grab" the screen and drag it up or down to scroll. Arrow keys help. I mentioned I have the bionic lapdock, so you might could disregard this.. Our version (and i assume it's only our version) won't adjust the lapdocks speaker volume. I find i have to go into system settings and toggle the output back to the phones speakers to fix this, every time i dock it. The phones speakers do sound better than my lapdocks as well, but it's still not a deal breaker for me. Battery life is awesome, with model at least. My roommate had the same phone as me, and loved the lapdock after i got mine, and he eventually got his own. Both of us laugh how we can leave these on for over 6 hours before it dies. Then it also charges your phone while docked, so you end up with a full battery on the phone after anyways. The phone temp isn't anything I've noticed or worried about. But the lapdock will cook and become unresponsive if you charge it while using it for a few hours. I can't comment on NFL or sports, sorry. I've heard of hacks and such enabling it, maybe. Don't take my word, look into it. Roms are a tricky one. I'm going to assume your case will be the same as mine here, it's moto after all. Only stock rom, or stock based roms (blur roms) will work on the lapdock (or use the hdmi at all). AOSP, AOKP, Cyanogen, none will use the HDMI port. And one last thing. My roommate and I found a nice tweak for using the lapdock. This is on a bionic, so your millage my vary. If we uninstall/freeze/disable the two webtop apk's found in system, the lapdock will actually use a sort of mirror mode instead of the webtop/tablet like interface. The screen resolution is bad (not terrible for movies although, just games and text) but performance is much faster, just as fast as the phone itself. Apps don't restart to webtop mode, and games work much better. Hope this post helps, good luck on your decision, and have fun! typed on my Bionic

Amazing write up and thank you. I would love to test one out with my phone. I need to ask Verizon if they have one or an employee does that I can test in the store. I am also waiting for the auction to restart on eBay. Was the 3/4g speed faster than tethering it wired to a laptop or desktop?

Not quite sure if i fully understand that question. Personally, I've never felt bottle necked while using 4g, tethered or not. It's just that dang fast. Also, I've never bothered to tether over USB, only WiFi hotspot. I couldn't day I've ever felt that has slowed me down. Now this was about a year ago, and for the bionic, but a website called bens outlet sold mine for 40 bucks. My roommate found his somewhere else for 30 or so, but didn't come with a charger. Not sure about your model, but hopefully there's one around for you under that 100 dollar tag. They're nice toys, I just don't know if i initially would have bought mine at all if i had to spend 100 typed on my Bionic

don't listen to anyone that tells you the lapdock is a waste of time- not even google, IMO they made the right decision to can the webtop project under the moto banner but could you imagine a unverisal webtop for all devices? take that iphone!! if you are running a totally stock ICS or JB, webtop is going to suck. hard. in fact it sucks hard always if you leave your clinging to anti-root mentalities, ROM blurred and $#!+, getting stun locked trying to open simple $#!+ like phone.apk... to get good use out of your lapdock you will need to AT the min: - get to JB stock - root your device - use a moto base rom (Blurry or FlyingJelly) or just use base deodexed ROM (this is the best option especially if your constantly switching back and forth) let me know if you make it there, i have some lapdock specific tweaks that turn the experience from hilariously frustrating to showing off at starbucks status. EDIT: - yes you can do everything you can do on the phone, but in big mode :-) - netflix, hulu etc. work fine. i have wiped NFL mobile from every install since GB lol, but there is a pretty simple hack to enable hdmi out (in fact i think someone posted modded apks somewhere, i will find it) - as for the forced mirror mode, i would no recommend this- primarily due to the fact that your resolution will be stuck to 940x560, then upscaled horribly. trust me, i have both the lapdock 100, bionic dock and HD dock.. the full 1080p on a 60" is surprising for a device this old. with mxplayer + NEON codec, i pump out full HD without a sweat. mirror moding a lapdock screen would ruin the fun^^. however.. there is a nifty trick with forced mirror mode and an app called ScreenStandby where you can use your phone as a remote control for the screen.

If I get one, I will on you. I would love to stream NFL mobile. My friend and I are doing a manual on his del Sol. Get back to you in a sec. That is some great write up too.

because they are ::ahem:: untested, as im sure you understand there's never been much demand for it. after the entire debacle with people permanently losing HDMI and stuff from webtop2sd i thought id be safer to only share with interested parties.

actually ive been working on keyboard mappings for the lapdock, should be able to completely customize Fn, Ctrl keys and possibly even remap the kernel sysrq keys. weee

I have the bionic lapdock, are there any tweaks to be able to lower the volume? Since ics made it off or full :(

Also I'd like to see those tweaks as well :)

**EDIT: can someone verify this for the *bionic lapdock*? i seemed to have misplaced it somewhere >_<

i am able to control volume just fine on the universal lapdock 100 (JB stock deodexed).

why infact there is... :-)

you need to control lapdock volume directly at the HW level- same thing with the car dock if you are using the USB audio cable. the assumption in design was that when your phone is docked (or HDMI to a device that supports audio output) it likely has an external amplifier that is controlling the volume (this makes sense because you want to get to 0 gain). you need to download an app from the play store called AlsaMixer. it will analyze your phone and tell you that it needs to install some files.

you will need to find the controls for

Oh cool, I'll check that when I get near my lapdock. Do I adjust both?

I know its been a year or 13 months. I am looking again at a Lapdock 500 on eday. Certified pre owned. $100 free shipping. I am running the flying J rom. Its a great rom. Has HDMI. I am thinking getting it and hoping it will run smooth. I do not want to drop hundreds on a new laptop tablet. I cannot bring myself to get a Ipad. I like apples, as in pies, juice, and eating them. Apple bottom butts too. Anyone find any modds to get NFL network to work on the Lapdock? I need to search harder on it. I do not think it will work on the lapdock as it will be the same as hooking to the tv through hdmi. Be nice to watch movies on via usb hdd or flash stick. I would use it for youtube for videos, working on my rockets/vehicles. Also surfing the net. I can put a stock rom that has been cleaned up too if I have to.

The lapdock without webtop acts purely as an hdmi monitor and keyboard/pad.
