Can a current owner of the Ultra or MAXX try PdaNet+ which is partnered with Foxfi (or other non-root wifi tether app that doesn't require root) to see if it works? I use my phone as a hotspot and need to ensure I can wifi tether with my unlimited data in order to buy this phone. I am really looking forward to the active notifications, trusted device unlock and continued great battery life!

Thanks in advance!

Just checked, PDA net free does not work. Puts up an error on the MAXX.

Thank you very much for checking! What was the error? Entitlement check or?

I tried foxfi, pdanet+ and 1 click wifi tether today at the store (along with a few others) and had no luck with any of them.

I was testing on the MAXX at the store so I don't actually know what kind of plan the store phones are on. My initial thought would be that on a shared data plan the apps would usually work because it was allowed?

On the shared (tierd) plans, if I recall correctly, the built in HotSpot should work.  You need the work around for unlimited datd plans or you have to pay $30 per month for HotSpot data.

You can no longer change any part of your plan of you reside on unlimited. I tried changing visual voicemail and the online prompt true forcing me to chose a replacement shared data plan.

Credit to DirtyDroidX and PipeHitter, after you root (thanks JCase!) You can now use SQLite Manager or the free method below to enable your mobile hotspots on the new Droids without the entitlement check!

http://www.droidrzr....e-hotspot-hack/

For using the stock Mobile Hotspot, here is a quick walk-thru using some free sql apps if you want to avoid paying for SQLite Manager.

As always, all standard caveats apply - ie perform at your own risk. ROOT IS REQUIRED!

Note: If you make an error while in aSQLiteManager don't panic, just back out and when prompted to save tap NO, then start over.

1 Launch your stock Mobile Hotspot app to ensure a db entry is created. It will not work and give a msg stating to call cust svc, thats fine.
2 Back out and download both aShell and aSQLiteManager by ANDSEN in play store for free
3 Launch aShell and agree to terms, etc.
4 Make sure you enable root access by checking box in upper left corner that says "root"
5 Tap "file explorer" and navigate to /data/data and select "com.motorola.android.providers.settings"
6 Select "database"
7 Select "settings.db" !!!BE PATIENT!!, it will take a momement to create a temp file and give you a response
8 Tap complete action using either reference to aSQLite
9 Tap open database with aSQLiteManager
10 Tap settings
11 Tap data
12 Tap pgdn until you see “entitlement_check” (mine was row 67)
13 Tap "edit" on row 67, then change "value" from the default of 1, to 0
14 Tap OK
15 Reboot

Now you should be able to use VZW Mobile Hotspot with no problems. I've connected with various devices and all behaves normally.

After doing as Chrisc2u listed the first time it didn't work.  I had to hit "back" a couple times to get it to "save changes".

This works for wifi hotspot & USB Tethering.

Thanks to everyone who makes this possible!

1)I remember doing this same fix to my Droid Bionic. However... Does anyone remember if this affects the Verizon OTA Update Integrity check?

Incase others do not know, when an OTA comes out, it usually checks the integrity of the download AND the current configuration of your phone. In the past i remember undoing some changes so it would pass and the OTA would go through. Cant remember if doing the entitlement check fix for Wifi affects future OTA updates.

2) The original thread here stated chris was looking for a 'non-root' method. Havent tried this yet on the Maxx, but were you actually able to edit the entitlement record in the DB with SQLLiteMngr, without being root?

I am running the maxx dev edition on stock unrooted with a locked bootloader and it works.  They updated FoxFi.

XT1080M developer addition:

I just updated to 4.4, have root however the entitlement check database has changed. The database accessing with SQ Lite  is:

data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.seetings/databases/settings.db

The choices here are: android_metadata, global, secure, sqlite_sequence and system

The only choice that gives a database is secure

If you choose secure and go down to entitilement_check (on my phone is line 60), you can enter a 1 or a 0 and the hotspot still prompts for payment. Has anyone found a workaround here?

Also, FoxFi did not work either.
