What fastboot are you using to flash recovery with? It would appear to be the wrong one.
How many different fastboots are there? Fairly certain it's the one that came with the latest Android SDK (or one of the most recent, anyway).

Any luck rooting this for us locked folks?
Nope. It's been said several times, this version does not, and may not ever, have a working root for it. If you're locked and on this version, you're rootless unless you managed to save root during the update.

I have the same problem and I am on ver. 18. It starts to update, then it stops and the phone restarts. I have frozen the update, because at this point it is just junk and will wait for a real update.I'm having a problem updating. I rooted using motochopper 1.3 and now voodoo doesn't even work. I temp unroot, reboot the device only to see that root access has be restored. I tried taking the OTA twice. Once after I protected root using voodoo and then I tried installing it without trying to protect root. Failed both times. I'm on .20 version not .18 do I need to unroot for this to work?

Um, that's not how it works. You can't just skip an update and wait for the next one.

Use the FXZ and remove the erase userdata line from the xml file and you can update that way. Or use the FXZ with the House of Moto's KEEPDATA script. The only caveat to that is there's NO way to keep root doing that.

Just a quick question. The update notification says 9.18.84. I'm on 9.18.79. But this thread is for 9.30.1. Is this just how Moto labels their OTAs or am I behind on an update?

yeah my update is showing 9.18.94 a little different yet
I think I'll freeze updater as described and wait a while , I wondered if I was behind on a update also
showing 9.30.1 on this forum
looks like the only thing this will fix for me I'd like is the GPS antenna not showing up when apps turn it on I don't need that anyhow
I'm on a razr maxx HD by the way maybe update shows different for maxx non HD

9.30.1 is the exact same update. How it shows in your about screen depends on a few things. But it's the exact same update. We went through the same thing with the last update.

The fastboot I used for this is (I'm fairly sure) the same as I'd used to flash TWRP to recovery last time, but I'll try it again with the fastboot you mentioned. There are at least 4 that I know of. You need the snapdragon fastboot. There's a copy of it in my house of moto zip file in the utils dir.

Where does one find the "different" fastboots? Again, I got the one I'm using from the Android SDK.
The new droids' FXZ has fastboot included. The one I shipped came from motochopper.

So I am having issues taking this OTA update. I had been locked, rooted and had safestrap installed which appears to be causing the issue. I went so far as fastbooting back to stock 4.1.2, rooting and protecting root in voodoo but the OTA update still fails. Anyone having similar issues or knows of a solution? Thanks in advance

Why would you take this update if you're rooted and using safestrap when there is no working root exploit for it? Sure you could maybe keep root through the update, but, what happens if you bork your phone and need to FXZ it? You'll permanently lose root.

My wife has the same phone with root but never had safestrap installed. She was able to take update and restore root through voodoo no problem.

Sure I understand that. BUT, what happens if that phone ever needs to be FXZ'd due to doing something with root that borks the phone? At that point you'd lose root as there's no way to save it through an FXZ and no new root exploit. I just want you to think ahead, that's all. If you're comfortable with that, no problem. On your phone, I'd be willing to bet the safestrap install is messing with the OTA in some way but without knowing what error you're getting when you flash the OTA it's hard to tell.
