I'm just a guinea pig that was so frustrated without root and would try anything.

Lucky this method did work.

Sadly though during this hunt, I gave up on root and bought an S4 (still Waiting to arrive).

Awesome. I had to unroot to get my phone back to Verizon. I accidentally took the update having my phone again. So happy to be able to root and greenify.

Just to give some context into how hard this stuff is to do.  That's the Linux kernel bug they're using in this exploit.

This is definitely exciting! I will be doing this over the weekend. Quick question- now with root can we downgrade back to a version that allows bootloader unlock? Also just to be 100% clear, my Razr M has 98.18.94- that's technically the same as 9.30.1 correct?

You need to understand a few concepts.  Root gives you system level access.  It does not circumvent the encrypted security layer, however, that prevents you from flashing unsigned partitions.  On the same token, it doesn't allow you to bypass the controls that prevent you from downgrading.  That's done through a partition (gp_main in this case) that specifies the minimum security level for each partition on the phone.  Once that's been updated, then there is no downgrading unless you're unlocked.  And even then there are restrictions.  You can't, for example, downgrade the TZ (Trusted Zone...we'll get to that) partition even if you're unlocked.  Finally, to unlock you need a vulnerable TZ partition.  The exploit that allowed unlocking has long since been patched.  There is no new exploit in the TZ.  Without that, you can't blow the proper fuse to unlock the bootloader as those functions are protected by the TZ.  Think of the TZ like a secure OS running on top of the Android OS...controlling lower level security functions.

Thank you for the very detailed reply, I appreciate it. It does stink that I still cannot use custom ROMs, but I will still be rooting to gain access to the other perks that I've been missing out on with this phone .

That's also not entirely accurate.    There is SafeStrap which will allow the use of custom roms.  Not as elegant as being unlocked, but, still a very viable option.
