You may want to try Rasp BMC instead.
I found xbian to be laggy as OpenElec as well. Let us know how it works out.

Interesting. The info I found suggested otherwise. Openelec was listed as a lightweight xbmc only implementation. Lacking on functionality but more responsive. Rasbmc was explained as being built on top of the rasbian os giving it more Linux functionality but making it laggy and slower to boot. Xbian was supposed to be the compromise of the two.

I'll probably try all three as well at some point. SD cards are cheap.

I believe you will find both of them being slightly laggy compared to a say a laptop running media center software. I have not tried Openelec but I know with Raspbmc you have to be patient. There are times with my center you have to wait several seconds for screen to render but given the hardware its running on that is to be expected. Using a Pi as a media center real strengths are being completely silent and low power usage. I am really glad I don't have to have a noisy laptop or mini pc hooked up to the tv. 

 

I have been curious if stacking two Pi's together will help with the lagginess, if anyone tries this I hope you post your results.

After multiple trys, I could not get a clean install of xbian. Each time the RPI would not boot. I'm going to try flashing noobs and then installing raspbmc. I've been using xbmc on some android stick PCs. They lag a little compared to my desktop. I'll post back about a comparison.

Try downloading the individual files from the sources.

 

My experience with the "Noobs" card seem to have some corrupted or old files.

 

Try downloading RaspBmc alone and install it then let it set for a few minutes while it updates.

 

When it boots and updates itself go to the power icon and click on it and select "Exit".

 

This will give you the option for a command line or reboot on the Pi itself by pressing escape and choosing the command line option.

 

Then you can run the sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade commands locally to get the latest updates.

 

I just finished updating one of the 2 I just bought of off Ebay and it is definitely a lot snappier than the stock that was provided.

 

Xbian and OpenElec caused me problems personally. OpenElec especially with just mouse movement being erratic and hard to control.

 

What are you using to format the card you are using and writing the image to it?

I'm still wiping the SD card so I'll go your route since you've had good luck.

I'm using windows so I download the .img files.

I am using SDFormatter to format the card as it formats the system part in FAT32 and the rest in EXT4.
 

Use the Full erase option and the format size adjustment set to "ON".

Then I use Win32DiskImager to write the image to the sd card.

I tried a lot of things but the instructions I posted earlier work best for me.

Using the command line directly on the Pi OS seems to work best especially to update the file you downloaded.

Well, I thought it was a bad install. On my last reformat I did a full overwrite which took about 5x longer than just a full format. I thought this was going to make the difference. I DL'd the raspbian image and mounted it using the suggested method. Plugged the card info the pi and still nothing. To verify the pi still worked I popped the original card in and the pi fired right up.

I'm now thinking it is the new card the pi doesn't like. I've got another I'm going to play with today. It is a branded card instead of the generic one I was using yesterday. I'll post some results later.

There is a table on this webpage that may help with the SD cards, maybe you have an SD card that has been verified not to work on with RPi. http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards

Make sure also that it is formatted in the proper format.

My first go was with a generic card. I'm using a pny brand this time. The card is smaller capacity so I'll be unable to tell if that was also a factor.

Make sure also that it is formatted in the proper format.

I just achieved successful boot of raspbian. It is going through setup now. Seems the generic card was to blame. I'll post my thoughts on how it performs a little later.

Make sure you set the format size to "On". I also had a card that worked fine at first but then would not boot back up. It worked on other equipment but would not on my Pi. Still working on that one.

You may also use the mini partition tool that's available online. Most Linux users preferred that method.

Which utf locale code did you choose? I picked en.us.utf8. However after I chose my timezone my system time is wrong. Did you configure WiFi through xbmc settings?

I used the same utf locale and my time did not change either. It said you had to change it in xbmc also which it was late last night and didn't make sense.
I configured the WiFi from programs and Rasp BMC settings. Just tick on the big icon at the bottom.

Try these commands and see if you can get the locales right.

 

You may not need the keyboard command.

 

You will have to reconfigure your timezone after the first boot:

dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

The keyboard layout:

dpkg-reconfigure console-data

And the localization:

dpkg-reconfigure locales
