When my Verizon Razr Maxx HD recently upgraded to KitKat (4.4.2), I found that I had "lost" the RETURN key on my SMS/MMS messaging keyboard. It had become an "emoticon" key. After some trial and error I discovered that I could toggle the emoticon key back into a RETURN key via the SHIFT key. Thus, I can once again enter an empty line in my SMS/MMS messages if I so choose.
