Security guru Jcase and friends at theroot.ninja have released a utility that will S-off and bootloader unlock the HTC One (M8), HTC One Mini 2, HTC One Remix, and possibly other newer HTC phones.  The only two requirements for the utility to work are a Sense-based ROM and root access, which is attainable with several exploits.  And in a move that is sure to earn the team the ire of many on the interwebs, they have decided to release the utility as paid, licensed software at the price of $25 per device license.  You can grab the utility, and read an explanation of why they made the decision to charge for the utility,

.

Now, please indulge me while I editorialize a bit.  Rather than regurgitate the explanations that are linked to above, I'll just add this: a move like this has been a long time in the making, and will likely become more common in the future.  And like it or not, it's a good thing.  It will allow the security experts to devote the time and obtain the resources they need to keep finding and producing the utilities that implement the exploits that allow us to have things like root access and bootloader unlocks.  As we have all been hearing for quite a while now, Android is only getting more secure, and these exploits are getting increasingly difficult to find.  And let's face it, the interwebs are great at promising huge bounties to find the vulnerabilities that allow us to do all of this cool stuff with our devices, but the reality is these guys are lucky to get 25% of any given pledged bounty.  $25 may seem a bit steep to some, but when you compare that to the price of most unlocked, developer edition phones, it's not even close.  All of us who benefit from the work these guys do, in their own time I might add, should in no way begrudge them for wanting to be compensated for that work.  If they choose to offer up a product for free, great, but if not, that is their decision, and it should be respected.

They're charging people to try to force them to learn how to use the tools and ADB/fastboot, without a utility.  I wholeheartedly support this.  The root and unlock/s-off are already super easy.  Forcing people to pay for a utility will likely force a lot more people to learn how to actually modify their device properly.

That's a good point I neglected to make. Maybe folks will be inclined to learn a thing or two before blindly charging in. Or it may actually make some realize that modding isn't something they should be doing after all.

It is a process of weeding of the chaff. This is the dawn of a new day, hence the Sunshine. They have been warning us for quite some time that the day would come. Those who hate are those who have separated the human component from the hobby and rarely give back 1% of what was given them. This tool is awesome in its construction. Much thought was put into it. I personally support thinking :) Sent from my S-Offed One M8

I would say $25 is a fairly cheap price to pay for the freedom that this gives your phone.

Sometimes it may be hard for longtime Moto owners to understand this freedom. With the HD/M unlocks 2 different times being crazy awesome, it's still tough to see the freedom this gives because neither time has had a huge Dev community.

With HTC, and I've owned 2, there has almost always been an unlock and S-OFF plus there has been some awesome community Devs that have done some amazing things with kernels and roms.

Much appreciation, respect and thanks to those guys for putting this out...

I'm going to give my thoughts on this as I see it as a double edged sword. On the one hand I firmly believe, as a developer, that if someone puts in the wrench time they deserve the right to charge for it. Period. The whiners that want a free lunch with the justification that "Android is free and open source" can just stop. Not everything is free on Android. There are certainly paid apps in the app store. So enough about that. There is, however, something I really hope they've considered. By charging for the app, there is an implied level of service. If I pay for something, I expect it to work and if it doesn't, then I have the right to support. On an app that's freely given I (should) have no such expectation. Many do, and I know first hand about that and how mad people get when you tell them no. But on a paid for app the expectation changes and IMO the customer has a right to expect that it works and is fully supported. I wish them the best of luck and genuinely hope this model works. It is a long time coming and is the right thing for the community. Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

I dished out the $25 clams and dont regret it at all. People can whine all they want, but like the DEVS say, If they put in the time, they full heartedly should ask for some dough. I don't have a Developer M8 on Verizon, But boy is it Unlocked and S-Off'd right meow and I'm happy with my purchase!

As an Android user, and enthusiast, however not a development person, I applaud the event. I'm an older guy, my generation has a very different relationship with nanotechnology and programming, but being a science and tech nerd at heart, I rate myself between the likes of you very learned and tech professionals here and the 'average' mainstream user of smartphones. I know just enough to attempt things, and always realize the self-taken risks associated with rooting, modding, alterations. But I have always tried to heed the mantra heard here so often, ''do your research, read, read, and re- read'' follow instructions, have patience.   There has always been a learning curve for me, even as all of the freedoms (of use) I benefited from, was the work of others. The people who expect ''one click'' root and unlocks to always be free, are IMO, out of touch. I don't have a lot of time to devote to becoming more skilled in development, even though I have used adb, but I still appreciate root more when I have to spend time learning stuff, and doing some small part of it myself (obviously with the guidance of others). The Android community in general and the Moto Android community especially, is a very giving and outgoing place to be (when I have the time). There are things I do for myself that make my life better, and then there are things I will pay others to do that I am not up to. I am still trying to remain faithful to Moto, hoping to see something upbeat happen if Lenovo does finally take over M.After seeing some of the petty and rude posts that one of these devs endured, (from rookie phone geek wannabes) I say again, these folks deserve to charge for something like this app, and most people like myself, could never begrudge people their due. Likewise the people who put forth the least personal effort and expect the complete benefits of others' work for free, need educated. My deepest respect and admiration goes out to the devs and admins and contributors here and as well the entire Andriod community. Android must become more secure, and yet some of us will always want superuser access to our devices.

Thank you again, all, for past present, and future help.

I shelled out full price to verizon for my new HTC One (M8) just so I could keep unlimited data, and gladly forked over $25.00 to Jcase for Sunshine! It worked like a charm and S-off and a unlocked boot loader on Verizon is priceless for so many reasons!

Some people are complaining because Sunshine is licensed to the device and not the user but you can't beat a fully unlocked developers phone for $25.00 and I would gladly shell out another $25.00 for use on another phone.

The licence should be to the device otherwise it would get abused. Honestly, it's money well spent in that if an ota breaks it for whatever reason, they will work at fixing it toot sweet. They've already proven that. That and it just makes the value of the device worth that much more. Sent from my S-Offed One M8
