** Work-In-Progress: Touch Preview is just that.. a PREVIEW. Do not complain about missing features, etc. The OS isn't nearly ready for primetime. **

Curious as to how the Ubuntu Touch Preview looks? Why not load it on your Droid Razr and see for yourself.

Instructions:

1. Make a Titanium Backup and/or backup in of your current Android or just keep it in another RomSlot. This preview is fun to play with but not a replacement for something as developed as CM 10.1

2. Download the Droid Razr Mini-Android base for Ubuntu Touch and place it on your device:
[03/01] (use the newest one)

3. Download the latest Ubuntu Touch Preview Filesystem . from Ubuntu:

If the above link is broken, use this link for a full listing of the current build (download the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip .. soon to be raring-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip):

4. Reboot into Safestrap. Create a NEW ROM in the #4 slot with the 2GB data option (important as it will not work with 1GB data partition option).

IMPORTANT:
4a. Install the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip FIRST, and then the phablet-2013xxxx.zip SECOND.

5. Reboot and Enjoy

FIRST BOOT TAKES A LONG TIME. AND THERE'S NO BOOT ANIMATION. BE PATIENT (MAYBE 3-4 MINUTES).

WHAT WORKS:
  • Display
  • Touch
  • Wifi
  • Sound
WHAT DOESN'T WORK:

There's so much that is still being implemented into the Touch version of Ubuntu, that this list could get pretty long.
  • Cellular data -Ubuntu WIP
  • CDMA phone/SMS
  • Barely any sensors other than touchscreen work. IE: no rotation, etc. Ubuntu WIP issue.
  • No HD codecs (still being worked on) Ubuntu WIP issue.
  • No screen timeout / auto blank -- be careful when walking away from the device. Need to press the power button to turn the screen off. Ubuntu WIP issue.
RELATED UBUNTU TOUCH LINKS:
(Some of these describe how to install it on devices -- you can ignore those and follow the above)

For some reason this looks very Miui to me. Maybe this will satisfy those 100 Razr users that are dying for Miui. Still wish I had my Razr to give it a go though...

Nice work D

I like it! It's different. The lay out is pretty awesome! Even the preview feels very smooth. Thanks man! Can't wait for a Beta working version!

So is Ubuntu going to develop their own kernel or will they inherit the Android kernel? Downloading now!

OMG, it's hilarious that you guys got this to even boot. I had enough trouble getting this thing to work right on the Nexus 7.

Fair Warning to everyone lookin' for a daily driver. STOP HERE. Ubuntu Touch is buggier than an African jungle. BEWARE. You are gonna find broken/missing stuff.

Both Ubuntu and Android share the same basic kernel. The Linux kernel. On the Nexus devices, Canonical did release their own boot.img, but, it's really the SAME stuff. Android currently runs on Linux architecture. What Canonical's main hurdle is is to adapt their OS to work on ARM architecture rather than an x86/64 Intel style.

The mention this on the omgubuntu page, pretty much a "smoke and mirrors" environment with demo items.

This looks very promising..i got it to load perfectly, without any extra wipes, just followed the directions...I was not a fan of the thought of Ubuntu or windows on my Maxx, but after seeing this, I may have changed my mind.

No. Only Safestrap offers kexec support.
