Ok thanks so much my phone was at 90% battery when it happened so I should be good on that part and I figured I'd just take the plunge and try to see if it works. Will I have to reroot my phone when I do this?

Yes. You can do that with the same Utility. :)

Did you try holding all three buttons down? Wait you don't have to go into FastBoot to use matts utility just run it

Turn off your phone.

Press and hold the following buttons at the same time until the screen turns on
1) volume down
2) volume up
3) power

Press Volume down until you reach the AP fastboot in the list
Press Volume up to select

You do need to be in fastboot. Except for rooting that is done through ADB when booted

If you are stuck with power on, hold all three buttons (simulates battery pull) until you get a white line that flashes at the top of the screen (means power is off).  After this flash, immediately release buttons and then press all three again.  If done quickly, it will put you into the fastboot menu. If not done quickly enough, the phone will reboot and you'll need to try again.  I'm not sure if this is the best method, but this is how I enter FB mode if stuck in boot loop or on the red M.

I used Matt's utility and have had no success in getting back to stock and stuck in ap fast boot. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything a number of times but nothing. It gets stuck at sending rpm and fails when it doesn't. What should I do?

What phone model do you have? Why did you use the utility? Are you on 4.1.1 or have you updated to 4.1.2? Did you have an unlocked bootloader? Which utility did you use? A mechanic can't fix a car, if he doesn't know what caused the problem or what kind of car it is.

I have a xt907 with a locked boot loader. I was on 4.1.1 and used utility 1.10 to get back to stock so I can update to 4.1.2 but it failed and left my phone in ap fast boot. I tried using utility 1.20 after i tried 1.10 at least ten more times and failed but I didn't know I needed an unlocked boot loader.

You have got to get something to flash correctly.  Try just flashing a logo.bin to get out of the failed flash issue.

Yeah. Rsdlite shows fast boot smq instead of xt907 under model though
