Possibilities are endless. Now that someone has finally cracked the bootloader on our device what are the possibilites? Will we eventually see custom Kernels, overclocking and who knows what else? Will there be a way to re-lock the boot loader? Will there now be a way to downgrade to previous versions on Android? Inquiring minds want to know!
You will see custom kernels from Hashcode and Dhacker (with implementation of Epinter code I'd assume) which has already gone pretty far for the XT925, which usually essentially the same kernel. (If they feel like it, go donate to them and see if you can convince them with money )
Overclocking I can't comment on.
Re-locking the bootloader requires knowing your unlock code... and your warranty is void anyway. This process skips the need for the unlock code so you wouldn't know it. This makes physical changes to the hardware, and not reversible. If you are worried about security, encrypt your phone.
You can downgrade with a locked bootloader with fastboot files AND with the upcoming TWRP by Hashcode. Here's how you would do it, flashing ONLY these files to be sure there isn't any issues.
This will wipe the userdata, and flash the new (or old) version that you wish to run. So if you wanted to run ICS on the bootloader unlocked DROID RAZR HD on 4.1.2 those are the commands you need to do.
You can find fastboot .
You can find fastboot FILES (for System Versions) .

If I recall, shouldn't a simple fastboot OEM lock suffice for locking the bootloader, similar to a nexus device?

If you unlock via the exploit you're unlocked for good. Running the exploit blows the QFuse, unlocking the bootloader.
If you have a dev edition that should work as long as you have your key right after that command.

This is really great news (bootloader unlock)...I am just wondering, I am stuck on 4.1.2 (with no root). Will the bootloader unlock make it more likely that we will see a root exploit for 4.1.2?
The unlock exploit requires root. A root exploit will come if Dan wants one to.

So is it safe to do the OTA to 4.1.2 after we've unlocked? And if so is there anything special we need to do if we've removed some programs and can't remember which they were?
Don't do that!! At this point we have no idea what will happen and it's a good possibility you will brick. After unlocking updates should be done with only with Dev produced files from someone here. Or just upgrading individual stuff like radio, Kernel etc..
