Wish this wasn't the case. I won't be buying another moto phone because of it.
Well, with all due respect, this is a silly thing to say. I will agree, just a mere few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you that I would not buy another locked Moto/VZW device. (many others though have been unlocked by the community such as the GS3/4, the Droid DNA and the Note 2). But I only HALF blame Moto on this one. They offer unlocked devices on other carriers with no issues. It's only VZW that jams up the works.
Anyway, back to the point, I swore off the Droid Razr HD because of what VZW forced them to do with their bootloader and locking it...UNTIL!!!

unlocked it. I have now happily acquired an HD Razr being that I can now unlock it and move on with my (expected) freedom.
You're anger, while valid, is misguided. Don't blame Moto entirely, they are merely VZW's puppets. If you (or anyone) wants to gain any traction, we need to start leaning on VZW. And sadly, they are the BIGGER monster to corner. Hell, even though Google (of all monstrous companies) now owns Motorola Mobility, they are still reluctant in unlocking their CDMA VZW devices 
. A sad, but true reality that only WE, the end user can influence...with our voices and wallets.
So stop signing petitions and STOP buying locked devices and STOP STOP STOP buying developer devices. All this does is feel the fire of separating "dev" phones from the cheaper, subsidized, contract phones. There is NO REASON to separate them and charge an arm and a leg for the EXACT SAME device. Oh, boo-hoo, now they won't have to stand behind their product under the BS auspices of "unlocked bootloaders" (which, BTW, kill baby seals if you read the disclaimers). STOP IT!
