One that I tried recently that I liked a lot was Lightning Launcher. It lets you scroll up and down, not just left and right, and it lets you pin apps and widgets which lets you basically put a dock anywhere on the screen. It's really cool.
I liked MiHome launcher, but the lock screen was bugging out for me - when I woke up the phone sometimes it would just skip right past the lock screen.
I've been wanting to try Action Launcher, but haven't been motivated to pay for it yet.

Nova and Apex are both very solid, but I generally use Nova when picking between them (it lets you put widgets in the scrollable dock, which I like).

Been using action launcher for a few weeks after nova for at least a year.

I played launcher swap when I got my maxx hd and ended up sticking with atom launcher. I was a long time go launcher user with my old Droid 2. Also liked vire launcher enough to keep in installed but they still have a way to go before I would start using it as a daily driver.

Seems like almost anything but stock is good. And I guess most non-stock launchers are fairly smooth. I've got Nova Launcher on mine now.It seems to work well. Don't know if I'm going to bother experimenting with anything else.

i used to use launcherpro, and adw ex, i find that apex launcher is pretty good too...i use the stock launcher though, i love the circles widget(and any "similar" clock widgets you may suggest are not the same, and not close enough for me)
