On ICS I had Kousch's SuperUser (1.0.1.7) installed. Then I backed up my binary using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Then I jumped into recovery to install the update.

After the flash, I tried to restore my SU binary from Voodo. It claims it succeeds (via toast), but Kousch's SuperUser still can't gain root. It does ask me to update my binary (it fails) though.

I have also installed Chainfire's SuperUser as well as SuperSU. Both are unable to find the su binary.

So that where I am, what should I do next (yes, I've already rebooted)?

Can I somehow symlink the Voodoo backup into place?

Usually if you do not update the binary before upgrading to JB you are out of luck. Not sure how well Voodoo works with Koush's SU either.

BubbleSort, I had the same thing happen to me. I was able to get root working again following these steps from Frankie1588 at XDA.

, I am not sure if I HAD to go through them because it still did not work so I followed these steps

with the files posted. Ran into a couple errors trying to install busybox but just ran through all the commands (make sure you get # via adb). When I was finished it still didn't work so I installed supersu from google play and rebooted. Ran busybox installer from google play and was prompted for supersu permission, granted it, and now all my root apps work. Although I now have superuser and supersu, at least it is working.

Thanks so much for posts to point me in the right direction. I ended up finding a really easy way to restore root.

 My scenario:

There was a symlink /system/bin/su pointing to /system/xbin/su. However, xbin/su didn't exist. I basically just remounted /system as rw and then copied my voodoo backup into xbin. Restarted and voila! Root!!!

How did you remount /system as RW when you had no root access?

To be honest, I'm not sure. Something might have been left over, but I didn't need to do anything special for it.

Exactly.

I just took the update today, also using Koush's Superuser.apk and his su binary as well, and VooDoo has no issues restoring it at all.

Did you just manually replace the su binary and superuser.apk yourself in the 246 install?

I had recently FXZd back to .246 and I used Razr's Edge but I replaced the files in there with Koush's versions, so it was fully installed on my system partition.  That may be a difference here....

SAM knows of my trials and tribulations. THIS finally worked for me.

I HAVE ROOT, HELL YEAH. This took literally over 7 hours (yesterday plus today) to get. I always had the su-backup but it would not work. I used the SU on page two of this thread and it worked, like magic.

Yeah, I did not make that but I shared it. IF you found it then I am glad it helped. I looked/worked for over 7 hours. It taught me a LOT about adb. Some like SamuriHL (Sam) gave tips. Follow Sam's directions and he is friendly. He THINKS you are not listening, or you are not listening, he will f%$king HATE YOUR GUTS. Joking, he will see this. He will be annoyed though and give you some epic sarcasm. Probably congratulating you for permanently losing root or borking your phone in the process. Sam is a nice guy (overall) BUT he hates my guts, lmfao. I can just see him saying, "No...just no." I read that on a thread and almost spit out my water.

Lol, sell this Bionic with JB and root to somebody else. Rare with root not I think. Then when the sucker finds out safestrap just will not work, I will see on some forum, "Safestrap won't work, says it installed, goes to menu select screen, then boots into stock" and I will roflmao from some unlocked(able) phone. Moto build quality is good BUT there is a reason they are bleeding money (saw it posted on some site). Locked, cannot customize, and refusing to change. SHOULD have changed a long time ago. Politics or not, when survival comes into play, f%$k Verizon. STILL locked on other carriers also. Nah, I would be honest about SS. It is fixable but cannot get answers on it. Nothing to explain behavior or get it working (guide me).

Rant over with.
