Hey guys.

I'm trying to root my Dad's Bionic before he updates to JB so that he can keep his tethering capabilities.

Only problem is, it isn't rooting. I've tried multiple computers with both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, I've updated to the newest drivers (and tried older ones, still didn't work), and I'm think a factory reset is my next step.

I just thought I would see what you all thought and if you know of anything that would fix my problem.

Thanks!

We need a bit more information than just "It's not rooting" to be able to give you an idea of what to try.

For one thing, it could be a ghost device in adb that is not allowing the automated root functions to run.

For another, it could be that the phone is not in USB debugging mode.

Any number of reasons.

I'm sorry. I typed in an unplanned hurry so I didn't get the chance to type more than I did.

USB debugging is on, it is in MTP mode (as I've been told it needs to be in MTP). I've tried new cables too, nothing.

OK, which method are you using to root?  RE, HoB, manual methid....?

Also, with the phone connected to the USB cable, in a cmd prompt go to the adb directory (blahblahblah\android-sdk\platform-tools) and type

and see if more than one device is listed.

Razr's Edge. When I'm in adb, I've typed adb devices and no devices come up.

Yep. Even with the phone connected adb still won't see it. :(

Then you got bigger issues.  Does Windows see the phone so you can transfer files to and from it?

Yes, it sees it as a portable media player (since Motorola has moved to that).

That is what MTP is.  Anyhoo - need to figure out why adb is not seeing your device.

Have you rebooted that computer?

Might want to try to uninstall moto drivers and reinstall moto drivers using latest drivers on the computer...i had to do that when i rooted with razrs edge

also go into device manager and see if the adb is showing up there.

Thanks Droidrzr for the continued support of my family and a special thank you to Kaos and Kelly....

But the adb system is not recognizing the phone being connected.

As for drivers, well he can transfer file to and from so the drivers are correct - but it is still worth a shot.

Alright good morning guys. Lol.

Back to this. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that didn't seem to help adb recognize the phone.

It does this with computers with both Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed so that's what gets me.

Anything else we can think of?

Specifically, are you using the drivers from my signature, or else the official Motorola Helper installer (2.3.9) from Moto's website?

At this point I'd try

And then start adb manually again.

Also, any idea if you are using the internal adb server with the root method or the one that you've (possibly) installed from the Android SDK?

My Windows 7 computer had the ones from your signature on it until I updated them. It didn't work on the 5.9.0, or the newer drivers.

My Windows 8 computer is the same way. Had 5.9.0 until I updated them. Also, I'm using adb from the SDK, I didn't pull it from the root method zip.

I uninstalled the old ones and installed new ones. That's how I've usually always done it.
