New user having update problem

Best Answer jpty01 , 02 May 2013 - 08:08 PM

Solved evidently in this case you can fastboot back. I am now running 2.3.5 again after being on JB and all my screen problems are gone. Now to try to update through ICS.

Thanks to all who replied. I hope this will help anyone else who is having this problem.

Yes it seems to me like something is trying to pop over the screen because if I use a moving wallpaper the pop up stops and the screen is stable. Do you think a new rom would help.

it cant hurt to try a different rom if that's what you choose to..... it will be interesting (to say the least) to see if that helps the problem :)

Hi back again with another question. I rooted the phone ok installed safestrap 3.11 installed recovery but when I reboot the splash screen never comes up just goes through to normal boot. I installed root checker and verified root, Safestrap recovery state is installed and shows up in superuser permissions. Is there something else needed to make safestrap work? Thanks for your help.

Help please I found this post about a fix for my problem could someone tell me if this would work and how to do it.

Thanks

" Tried doing this same thing. The screen was super glitchly especially down in the keyboard area. After many attempts to flash via matts 1.8 utility I dealt with it for the last week. The issue I believe is some missing file between GB and JB. I finally sat down today to fix my phone, resulted in flashing back to 2.3.5 fastboot file via RSD lite. From there I OTA updated through to 4.1.2. I since tried flashing 4.2.2 which I didn't realize I had the XT910 rom. This led to an encryption issue I had to reflash JB. This time I used matts utility and the screen is fine."

There is no way that is accurate. There was no way to return to GB after going to ICS or JB. You will always have a soft brick and not a booting phone when trying to downgrade using a Utility or RSD

That was the issue I was thinking of about the webtop partition not being updated. Unfortunately we tried that and it did not help. Now that you have posted again I will brainstorm some more lol.

Thanks for looking into my problem. I have found 5 posts on forums of people having the same problem when updating to JB directly to GB maybe we are missing some type of video driver. I would like to try a Rom to see if that would help but even though the phone is rooted and safestrap 3.11 is installed and active the splash screen will not come up on boot up to enter safestrap. I have reinstalled and wiped everything several times on two different laptops running Windows 7 with 64 bit drivers.Matts utility seems to work great and  I have no errors come up on the install screens. This phone is new purchased from an ebay seller and he got them as a bulk sale from Best Buy. It was a demo model because I had to do a reset after first start up to remove demo mode. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated not sure what else I can do.

Please check this 2nd post about someone with my problem saying he went back to GB from JB. I did not think this was possible. If I went this route woiuld it brick my phone.

[QUOTE=Bakerboy448;2418950]@Johnny so unless I am misunderstanding, you were on Jellybean, then magically fastbooted to Gingerbread, and then OTAed (assuming via the OTA being pushed, not via flashing) to JB ?

Funny thing, if you flash GB or ICS on a JB kernel, it doesn't work, and won't boot, and you end up softbricked.

I was originally on GB and tried to flash directly to a 4.2.2 rom. With no luck matt's JB utility was more readily avail than the GB and ICS on. I tried options 1 and 2 numerous times all resulting in the glitchy screen issue. The screen would be fine if I was scrolling but as soon as I stopped it would show a nice colorful design on the lower third, along with being patchy and slow. I found matt's how to for RSD lite after I ran into a low batt issue partial flash. Altered a usb to make a factory cable. I proceeded to download a 2.3.5 fastboot file put the phone in fastboot and flashed with RSD.

From what I read JB is more of an upgrade to ICS opposed to the 'stand alone' if you will of ICS? Correct me if I am wrong here? I am not sure if I had a kernel issue(didn't update) as I didn't check, but I did have issues booting and black screen issues. Sometimes it took multiple tries to boot up. Otherwise it would go to the back lit black screen after the moto logo. The black screen also persisted after boot up, as it would turn black mid use or would be black returning from an 'off' screen.

I got my GB fastboot from:

I believe rsd install was included w matts utility download.

Just install rsd lite and make sure you have the most recent moto drivers.
Then follow matt's rsd how to.

Edit:
To answer you on the push, yes on push. I went to about phone, check for updates.

That's really odd...... typically you can not go back to ICS and certainly not GB after updating to JB ........ going to backtrack a bit here......was it the actual JB OTA (from stock) or did you flash a JB ROM ..... ?

If it was a ROM, then you never actually left GB 2.3.5

If it was the OTA , then this MAY turn out to be a MAJOR breakthrough!!!!

:)

I think I'm trying to just cover all bases on this issue...... only because its supposed to be not possible to downgrade .....

It is possible that thru the update process, it never actually FULLY completes..... if that is the case.... then you never FULLY leave GB thus the ability to fastboot back.....:)

It would be really cool tho if you have in-fact stumbled upon a process to go back to GB 2.3.5..... :)

I was originally on 2.3.5 and the phone would not OTA update. I kept getting the message that my phone was already up to date " no update necessary" . I contacted Motorola customer support and according to my IMEI number my phone showed to be running JB already and they tried to push an update but no luck. The phone is bone stock no root. I then found Matt's utility and ran it successfully and updated to JB. That's when the screen started to have problems so I believe updating from GB to JB missed something but no errors showed up when running the update program. Everything worked running JB and the phone showed I was running 98.72.16. Maybe the kernel was not modified so I think this is probably an exception to the rule. Do not know for sure but just glad someone found a way for my problem to be resolved.

I think just for shucks and giggles... I think I will try to repeat your process, to attempt to return to GB ..... worst case scenario it won't work and I use the latest utility to rescue my phone back to stock JB ..... :)

The main thing is.... it worked for you and your phone is not bricked and is working properly....:)
