Does actual rooting possibly mess up phone? I think how I messed it up was trying to flash RAZR ROMs onto my bionic. I'm not sure what did

Rooting, in and of itself, typically does not have any adverse actions to the device. Usually the only way anything can get messed up during root is by user error. I just got my hands on a Bionic myself today and am getting ready to install the Jellybean OTA then root it.

Root doesn't mess up your phone. Flashing ROMs meant for other phones will though. You will need to do some reading of the posts around here and flash a Bionic ROM. Spend some time getting educated, there are some excellent people on here who will help... But if you don't bother to read what is being said there won't be much sympathy for your plight.

OK yea, that's how I messed this one up then is by flashing ROMS that were for RAZR SEEING IF THEY WOULD WORK AND THEMES.won't do that again. Yes I am reading a lot on here and learning so as not to ruin this new one.

Rooting and installing roms won't ruin your device, but you don't want to install roms for a different device because some of the things under the hood are different.
