Hello All,

New user to this forum.  Lured by promises to re-establish root after losing it during the upgrade to JB.  If you guys didn't have a forum like this for people like me, I'd never have achieved root in the first place, and neither would most people.  Your service is greatly appreciated.

As the title says, I'm attempting the Ubuntu exploit published djrbliss. Was rooted for the entire ICS cycle.  Let me just preface this by stating I'm almost a total noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux. I'm a Windows server, and desktop administratror holding several certifications from CompTIA and Microsoft.  I have the skillset to pull this off, but will need some guidence from those "in the know" as I am getting an error I can't get around.

So I have read a few posts from other Bionic users, but I haven't seen anything from anyone that has used the Ubuntu exploit to re-root their phone.  I'm sure there are a few, but no posts. I'd like to hear from anyone that has used this with success, as I'd like to pick your brain about a few things.

I have created a LiveCD installation using Ubuntu 12.04.2. I had no issues until I got to this part of the directions:

Finally, download and prepare the required files to the Samba share:

cd /tmp/share
wget http
://vulnfactory.org/public/motoshare2.tgz
tar xvf motoshare2.tgz
sudo chmod
755 run.sh

When I run the third line of code beginning with "tar xvf"... I get a return of something like: Not tar format. Unrecoverable error. Then everything stops.  I thought I followed everything to the letter.  Anyone have any idea of what I did wrong? Obviously, I did not go any further.  I have no use for a brick.  Sucks to get nearly to the end only to get hung on one line of code.

So there you have it.  Sorry for the long, rambling post, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. I'm sure I left out a lot more, but it was long enough already.  If I can get this going I will post screen shots of my process in order to help any more Bionic owners get their beloved root back. Thanks for the help in advance.

Other people had no problems doing this off of the live CD, me on the other had did. I had some inexplicable issues with simple commands off my live CD. What ended up working for me was installing Ubuntu on a VM and everything went flawless. The VM I used was

by the way, you won't brick your device trying to do this, if it fails you just won't achieve root.  As poster above stated, I would check the syntax/spelling of the command - and did the previous command finish successfully?  the command above it downloads the (zipped) file to set this whole thing up from Dan's server, so if that step didn't complete properly, nothing else will work.  The command starting with tar unzips everything and sets it up properly on the share.

I am going to try everything again until I get it right.  I have my Ubuntu installation on a USB drive. Had no problem running LiveCD. From what I remember reading about LiveCD, it uses VirtualBox as a live VM if you don't boot from it. That's how it runs from within Windows.  I have booted from it however. I'm not sure how it should make a difference, but I can definitely install as a VM and run from my Hyper V server if I have to.  It looks like everything was in place to work until I encountered the "fatal error". It didn't close the terminal however, so I was able to verify syntax was correct.  The step before did indeed download the zipped files to the share I created, but the error response sounded more like it was not the correct format to unzip. If I can reproduce the error again, I'll upload screen shots.  Thanks for the replies. I will follow suggestions from those that replied and post back.

tar xvf motoshare2.tgz

A file with a tgz extension is usually a "Gzipped Tar File". I believe the following should work:

tar xzvf motoshare2.tgz

Thanks to all of you that tried to help me.  I was successful the next time around.  I'm not sure what my exact issue was, but I started over with my LiveCD on USB this time with 0 persistence versus 500MB last time. The file unzipped this time, and everything else finished like a dream.  Dan, you are indeed the man, and you scored another $20 donation for your cause.  Thanks for everything you do, and thanks to everyone else that tried to help a noob like me.  I genuinely appreciate it very much.
