This probably won't help much but the link is an explanation of what RIL is.

I can't think of anything other than the obvious reboot.

You guys are both on stock 173? I get killer battery life. Razr MAXX and get about a day and a half to 2 days. But again, with the ICS radio the 4G murders my phone. I used better battery stats to monitor battery usage. I charged the phone fully, then didn't use it for about 4-5 hours. BBS didn't consistently pick up a certain app that was causing drainage. When I looked at my signal strength it was horrible. Around -135dBm compared to my current 173 at -75dBm. The phone just wouldn't "catch" and hang on to the signal. When it did, it stayed at like 1-2 bars.

4G. The bars just show how, for the lack of a better term, reliable the connection is.

This is pretty true. However if you are comparing the carriers and location etc... I've seen people with 4g get as low as 2.3 mbs down and people on 3g as fast as 3.+ down. But, as its stated above and by term and technology yes 4g is much faster and up to 10 times the speed of average 3g, but again that's true or I should say 4g lte and not T-Mobile 4g. I know of some guys that claim they get better 4g via T-Mobile than att and Verizon's lte. I'm not saying its true but depending on the connection and the device etc... it could happen..lol Anyway I'm way over topic here. I understand your question. You want to know if reception dulls speeds basically? The answer, yes as well as traffic of data in that area as well as a few other factors.. I'm pretty sure. If I'm off a bit my apologies..lol

Thanks. I live in 3g world right now. Say 4g full bars is a 10 from one to ten on a speed chart. Is 2 bars 4g still a ten but ur connection is not that great therefore you might drop down to 3g at anytime? Trying to get a grasp on the whole 3g,4g and signal. Stuff.
I personally don't notice a huge difference between the two. To me I would say 4g is a little faster, not like its lighting fast or anything. My big test would be to watch a movie on Netflix in 3g than in 4g. But just browsing the web I don't notice much of a difference.

I've noticed a huge difference in speed depending on location...but haven't bothered to look at the signal bars. I live in the 'burbs of Detroit and I'll average around 10 mbps. I think I'm at the fringe because depending on where I am in my house I'll drop to 3G. However in Lansing (just three blocks from the capital) get 30mbps.

I use the speedtest.net app...not sure if there's a better one, but it works for me.

If you want to test your internet connection speed, download Speedtest.net from the Play Store.

If you mean a benchmark for your phone, download Antutu Benchamrk from the Play Store.

Both free.
