Looking at this phone as a potential new upgrade, the only thing that bothers me is that nobody seems to think too highly of the camera.

Will rooting and installing a custom Rom, something like stock jb, camera quality/speed? I'm unsure of whether it's more of a hardware or software issue with Motorola's add-ons.

Cheers!

Some ROMs have faster camera speeds but as far as I know their aren't any improvements in quality. Also the camera is not terrible .

There are some good apps out there that make the camera better... Yes the S3 camera is great, but I dumped the S3 for the RAZR HD I would rather have a phone that works and has good signal than a great camera.

Go for the HD you will like it.

Actually, I think the camera used to be worse than it is now. The latest verizon update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 has definitely sped up the moto camera. My issue used to be with the camera lag, and while it is still there, it has been greatly reduced.

I like the 4.2 camera or pudding camera. Both seem to blur less than stock.

The stock Moto camera is great in my opinion. The only issue is the software. Stock software is not very good on the HD, which is why I use different camera apps. Camera360 Ultimate is a great app with lots of filters.

If you're using the stock camera there's virtually no lag while taking pictures, it's almost instant.

I think the camera works just fine on this phone. I mean it's supposed to be a phone first and a camera and other things second right? If want something that's going to awesome quality pictures buy digital camera not phone! Just my opinion that's all.

I still want it to be perfect :p

I can't get the stock camera to focus quick enough to catch my kids. Usually the 4.2 camera works better in this regard. I keep 7 camera apps on my phone for different situations. :D
