When you have a flash failure, it will boot into AP fastboot.  You need to get something to flash correctly before moving on.  Most people just flash the bootlogo.

Right, what Kaos said.  Or take a stroll over to the House Of Bionic (you'll find it under Bionic Forums here), read everything, read it again, and then you should be able to restore your Bionic.  Will probably have to reroot after you make it to jellybean (luckily there's a thread for that too...)

What GB were you on? I believe that you cannot just jump from Bread to Beans without having Ice Cream. Since you are in the bind and the phone is not setup for the 98.72.22 update you will have to RSD back to Gingerbread .905 or .907, I can't remember the last update for that one, then you can use stock recovery to flash the ICS update. After that is setup then and only then you shall be able to get Bean. As long as everything is Stock you should be fine. Since you have to go so far back I would use the for3v3r root method for Gingerbread and get OTA root keeper to back up you Root and temp disable it while updating. Through each processes I would enable Root and update the SU Binary on each update just to insure that you are still Rooted. Happy adventure.

Depending on how much of JB was flashed prior to failing, you cannot flash back to GB. You can flash JB over GB thru rsd with the fxz. As Dubs mentioned, the HoB is a good tool for that BUT be sure to read the FAQ's and the threads prior to using. 99.9% of all possible errors have been addressed , so any support should be for something not discussed.
