I'm rooted, and have an unlocked bootloader. Been using stock ROM and most recently, MIUI...My problem is:

When I try to do a back up using ROM manager (CWM) it works, however, when I want to restore it, I get all kinds of errors:

E; format _ volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system

Error while formatting /system!

Also, when trying to install a new ROM (after wiping cache, data, etc.) I get these errors although it says it's complete:

E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log

E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log

....and so on and so forth.

With TWRP I just get a failed message  instantly....

I've re-flashed CWM using fastboot many times, and can't seem to get past this.

I use an external memory card...Is that an issue?!

At the moment I'm stuck in recovery..when I reboot, I can't get past boot...

HELP!

Well an external SD card wouldn't be an issue that's what I use when flashing ROMs I'd recommend using matts utility to go back to a clean stock and start over

Thank you. I was able to get back into the phone after messing around with it for a LONG time..but still can't seem to restore back up ups or different ROMS. I'll look into it. Thanks again.

UPDATE: Yay!!! Problem solved! After messing around with this phone for a LONG time, I decided to update CWM to v6.0.3.2 (Batarang), and voila!!!!!! Success!

I was able to successfully backup my stock ROM, flash my favorite MIUI Rom, back up that MIUI rom, restore stock ROM, and successfully restore my MIUI Rom WITH NO ERRORS! I feel brand new lol

Now remember that if you start using TWRP that CWM backups are not compatible with TWRP and vise versa
