I just thought I'd share this with fellow tinkerers... So my girl friend lost the remote for her DVD player. I decided to bring over my Wii thinking it would play DVDs. Its been in a box since my ex that wanted it hasn't been in the picture! lol... Once I got it all wired in I found out that it doesn't support DVD playback without a homebrew app. Hmm... well you know it took me all of 30secs to decide what I needed to do! ... So I got everything together that was needed and popped in the SDcard. The entire time my GF asking me "what are you doing?". not quite yet. I need to get the homebrew browser working long enough to download the newest MPlayer... she doesn't have internet at her place yet and USB tether shows connection on the phone but no go on the Wii... I'll need to bring my GNex with me tomorrow for wifi tether. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Yeah mPlayer and hackmii's DVDX don't work on new Wiis.

The go-to method for easy Wii hacking would be the tool ModMii. My personal forum of preference is GBATemp

Originally Netflix worked like an actual game on the Wii. You would put the "game" in and play it. However, they now have an app up on the wii shop that you can just download.

And as far as wii hacks go, there are a TON! Everything from loading games from a USB hard drive (so that you don't have to swap disks/worry about scratching them), to media players, to emulators (but i'm not going to open that can of worms on this forum), and beyond.
