And working recoveries used to be so simple...

With the AOSP ROMs out now, you shouldn't have to manually mount system anymore.  They have scripts built-in to do this.  The wipes don't throw me off too badly, it's the same that I've had to do on my tablet.  I've started adding in "format data" to the mix when I flash new ROMs.  It gets a lot of memory back.

Alright, I must be missing something here, as this device has to be by far the most confusing of all devices I've run across in my vast Android escapades from a modding perspective.

First of all, I tried to install RageHD as my first go at replacing the ROM on this device, but after formatting system, data, and dalvik cache, mounting the system, then installing, it gives me some grief about the binary not working or some nonsense in the zip.  I figure, well maybe it's the directions:  "you know the drill, wipe wipe yada yada."  Not quite spelling it out for me... I must be slow like that.

So, enter the Nexesque ROM (I hear it's big with cool kids, so hey, why not?).  I try something different - just leave the thing in the download folder, instead of moving it to the SD Card (less chance of gremlins molesting it on the way), wipe system, data, dalvik cache, go to the download folder and poof - gone?

Right, so... This must not be McDonald's, because I'm not lovin it (not that I would even if it were, if we're being honest here).

Have I lost my touch, lost my mind, or is the secret sauce buried in the Pandora's box of this phone?

You know, I would have just did the whole "factory reset" deal like the instructions said, but on this device, it warns you it's going to take years of memories away from you, your first born, and every Christmas present from the past 10 years - I figured that must have been the secret Satan tickler that gets him to jump out of the phone and make you his prison buddy or what have you.

So what is the magic rig-amoral that makes this device tick?  Clearly it's not like the past dozen devices I've owned.  (TWRP 2.6.0.0)   From my experience, most devices kind of warn you about wiping systems, but you know, each device likes to get rubbed a certain way.  Can someone give me the inside track?

Wiping data was your fatal mistake. It will get rid of downloads, backups, pics, etc. that are saved on the internal. Try downloading the ROM on your computer, then transferring to your external SD. With the ROM on your external, it will be safe to wipe internal storage. Also, make sure you have a backup saved to your external, prior to flashing anything new.

Also, are you rooted, with your bootloader unlocked, and do you have an aftermarket recovery installed? There's really nothing magical about this device that makes it any different than your past devices. If you have previous experience with your Android, you should be okay with this phone.

Yeah, rooted, unlocked, and TWRP 2.6.0.0.  Backups in place, and I won't do the wiping data bit.  I'll give the factory reset a try.  Perhaps this new TWRP is just worded a little funny, I don't know.  I'll give a download another try (maybe Rage was corrupted - and obviously I deleted data), and try again.

The one thing that threw me for a loop on this particular device was the number of things I'm needing to wipe combined with the manual mounting of system before and after flash.   Ordinarily it's a flash, wipe dalvik/cache - maybe factory reset (if not an update) - then bob's your uncle.

I got the Nexesque up and running.  Looks like a few moments of rushing caused a world of hurt (and I think my RageHD was corrupt).  Apparently, I went straight for the formatting data instead of doing a factory reset.  That may have been part of my problem.
