  • Verizon Razr Maxx HD
  • Never unlocked (the unlock qfuse is NOT blown and the TZ is untampered)
  • Previously motochoppered for root while running 9.16.6; edited sqlite db and froze some apps
  • Phone ran 100% fine with no crashes/freezes/reboots from the original ICS release in 2012 up through and including build 9.16.6
  • Before updating to 9.18.79 via soak test OTA, unfroze all built-in apps and used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
    • Forgot to revert sqlite change before updating  :wacko:
  • OTA appeared to go successfully with no indication on-screen of any failure to apply any part of the OTA

Problem: Device reboots randomly, or semi-randomly:

  • Overall it seems to reboot between 1 and 4 times daily
  • It reboots more often when I am using the device to play music, perhaps every 2 hours
    • via 3.5mm headphone jack or bluetooth
  • Strangely enough it doesn't seem to ever reboot during weekends or while tethered  :o
    • It reboots when it's on or off the charger;
    • It reboots when it's next to something larger;
    • It reboots when I'm on the phone;
    • It reboots when I'm asleep at home;
    • It reboots when I'm on a plane;
    • It reboots when I'm on a train;
    • It reboots in the day, it reboots at night;
    • It reboots when outside it's bright;
    • It reboots in the absence of light.
    • It reboots always, I tell you;
    • What solution would Samsung sell you?
  • :ph34r:

Here's what I've tried:

  • I've tried freezing about 50 (yes, 50) apps using Titanium Backup. I froze almost anything that I could conceive of that might have any kind of background activity, whether stock or downloaded from the Play Store.
  • I've tried un-freezing everything to no avail.
  • I've tried a FDR, wipe cache partition, disabling SmartActions (as suggested over at XDA), and praying to Woodside Our Savior, to no avail.

Heck, I've even tried flashing back to 9.16.6, but that didn't work out (yet; SamuriHL is helping me :)) for reasons I haven't yet determined. Overall it's pretty frustrating that I can't work out how this is happening and how to fix it. Any tips for this Dr. Seuss wannabe?  :rolleyes:

X-Ref to XDA Forums, where a few other users seem to be having the exact same problem and a few more are having almost the same problem:

I thought I was alone in the reboots. My phone however, is unlocked and rooted. It seems to have something to do with bluetooth. Mine only does it when the bluetooth is connected and i leave it laying idle.

Mine does it even if I've never turned bluetooth on for the entire duration of that boot. I'm not convinced that the bluetooth stack is the culprit. Listening to music just with the 3.5mm jack does it.

Maybe it's overheating, or a memory leak, or a CPU watchdog?

Flashing back to 9.16.6 eliminated the random reboots entirely. Awesome.

If you are reading this and you want to get rid of the random reboots on your Razr HD / Razr Maxx HD, navigate to the Razr HD Development section of this forum, and look for SamuriHL's downgrade script. Follow his instructions. It doesn't matter whether or not you've rooted or unlocked your device; as long as you are running the stock ROM, it will work.

My last phone did that right after the update, completely virgin.    I ended up having to send it back for another.   I did however get an unlockable model and so far love it :)

Yup, I had reboots no matter what, not unlocked BL.  Downgraded and retook the OTA still did it without re-adding any apps.  I called Verizon and got a replacment sent out, was super easy to do.  Phone has 1 year warranty, doesn't matter what vendor you buy from.  I got mine at BB.  Got in the replacement, unlocked it and installed CM 10.1, haha.  Should've done that in the first place!

What I did prior to my replacement was downgrade and then I flashed the new radios on the 9.16.6 firmware and then froze the updater.  Was working just fine again.

Someone else had tied some freezes to the smartactions on the stock rom, apparently clearing the data for smartactions fixed it for some.
