um with it being completely locked down on VZW, absolutely not.  For me at least.  If you care about rooting and ROMs... if not, have at it.

I personally think the not x is good enough to not need a custom ROM. I agree root would be nice but as a phone I think its awesome

Not sure how you know this without actually owning/using one, but for me, like I said, I've got too many other things for which I need root (Titanium backup for very big one) and ROMs.  Dev edition, maybe - but I'm pretty sure I'm going to peace out of Verizon once my contract ends next month...

Custom ROM or not, I would still purchase the Dev edition for several reasons.

1. Root - if for nothing else, backups.

2. No Subsidy contract - I can come and go as I please with no ETF's

3. My Device - If I am paying full retail, why would I buy a locked device?  The Dev edition is the same retail as the locked.

4. Resale - Dev editions hold resale value a little better.

Every moto launched started locked on VZW... What makes any of you think this device wouldn't be rootable, at best, after awhile?

What makes you think that there is an endless supply of holes to push an exploit through?  With every one that is patched, your chances of root becomes that much less.  The god of exploits has retired.  I wouldn't count on it at all.  If root is important to anyone, you really need to seek out factory unlocked devices....

I have a question about unlocked bootloader vs. Root. Does having the Dev edition with the unlockable bootloader just make it easier to root or does the dev edition come with root capabilities out of the box?

You guys make a very good point. The Apple TV 3 still hasn't been jailbroken yet and I wouldn't count on it. I would assume similar issues come up with rooting when companies patch security exploits

If the bootloader is unlockable, root is achieved instantly since it does not need to find an expoit hole to get in the system, it just goes in.

Well, root still doesn't just happen and stock Android is striving for more security. But unlocked means you can put a custom ROM with root built in or modified stock ROM with root on it easily.

Anyway, I'm rely hoping on an Oct or Nov Nexus

But if my Bionic dies I'll probably go with a stock x ... Prices aren't great for off contract plans yet. I might spend the money for a Dev addition out of principle if I can afford it when it's time.

Ah, makes sense. So Root = Sp*rm, Bootloader = Egg :)

Did not purchase an X but went to VZW yesterday and played with one. I liked everything about it. The phone felt comfortable in my hand, easy to hold and use one handed. The material felt good. The back of the phone felt kind of rubbery to the touch. Definetly buying the dev edition when it launches. Been going back and forth between the S4 Dev and the X Dev but I think I'll go with Moto.
