So I was able to trade my Galaxy Nexus for a RAZR MAXX and now I have some questions, since I do plan on rooting.

1. Once I update to the official ICS OTA, is there a method I can use to root and install recovery? If so, please link me.
2. Do I actually need a bootstrap/safestrap? I barely know anything about them, besides safestrap, which from what I understand is used to test out ROMs and stuff. Do I really need either of these things? If so, can you please link me to where I can find them for a rooted version of ICS?
3. Once I have the previous 2 questions figured out, am I good to go in terms of flashing ROMs? I'm no noob when it comes to stuff like that.

Thanks!

EDIT: I notice that all of these things can be found somewhere in the forums, but you have to understand that it's all very overwhelming.

I'm pretty new to all this myself, but i don't think bootstrap works with ics. Safestrap is basically like partioning a hard drive. You install safestrap an it protects your original operating system on the non safe side. You backup your oe system, then switch to the safe side an flash whatever rom you want to run. If you have issues or don't like it you can switch back to the non safe side an everything is there just like you left it.

Clear as mud? Lol

Ya, now I understand better lol. Thank you. I just need an explanation of bootstrapping and I'm good to go. I think I remember doing it on my old DROID X but I'm not too sure.

Boot strap works, but none of the current roms support it. Bootstrap overwrites the current system so you can't go back. Safestrap backsup the current system and makes a new place for you to place a new system. You can then switch between the two systems. Safestrap will not allow you to make changes to the original system, only the one it creates. if you are new, I suggest safestrap. Also worth a note, you can not flash OTA roms (meaning verizon/motorola official roms) to the secondary safestrap system, only user made ones. If you would like to play with the original rom and tweak it, use safestrap, and download the .211 deodex rom and flash that. Then you can play with it, if you mess it up, you can reformat the system and reinstall 211 and keep doing that. Then once you are comforatable you can go make the changes to your original rom.

For new users this is important, do not install boostrap then install safestrap. DO NOT INSTALL BOOSTRAP AND INSTALL SAFESTRAP OVER IT. If you have installed bootstrap, google instructions on how to correctly uninstall it first. Installing safestrap over bootstrap gives you a brick. You can get back from it, but if you are new it will be hard.

Also, please try DXHome. Best home launcher in the world. No fancy functions to confuse you and it is fast! I don't know why, but I jsut want to share how great this launcher is.

Thank you for this. Now I completely understand. I don't think I need either of them. It's not like I'm a newbie when it comes to custom ROMs and such. I've had countless Android phones before and I rooted and ROM'd all of them. Again, thank you so much.

If you do flash a rom, you must use one of them. The boot loader isn't unlocked so we don't have the ability to use the stock recovery.

Oh, so I suppose I need safestrap after all. I thought it was just extra protection.
