As john was saying.. Its most likely hardware issues..
Droid RAZR XT912 Maxx'd - ArtMOD 4.31 (Carrier - PagePlus)
This is unfortunate.
It pains me to see $700 paperweights due to negligence.
Yes there is..... however it is underneath the battery.... and will require full dissembling to get to it

I'll post back as soon as it's disassembled.

I'd say that based on the rust itself on the inside of the phone, it's most definitely water damaged.
Now here's what I don't know, are all of the red rectangles water indicators, or do they just happen to be red?

Alright, thank you for your help.
Anyone know any methods used in attempt to repair a water damaged phone?
He has an iPhone 5 now, so he doesn't really care about any more possible damage, so if there's any solutions out there, I'm glad to try them.
Perhaps submerging in rubbing alcohol?

Corrosion is the problem and alcohol doesn't cut it. That's why it's necessary to get it in something that extracts the moisture completely before it can go that far.

Submerging in rubbing alcohol will cause more damage as it still contains water and is conductive...... you could possibly try burying it in a bowl of rice for a couple days... the rice will attempt to "suck" any remaining moisture out of the phone... "The force is strong with this one..."
Got it in rice now, will post back in a couple days with my results.
Thanks fellas!
I find myself highly motivated to overcome any troubles that face me in the world of technology.
Have a great night all of ya!

You probably already know (or assume) this.... but make sure it is completely buried in the rice .... no part of the phone visible....

Yup yup! Lol. The battery, the motherboard, and the screen assembly are all in their own sealed containers of rice, fully submerged from top to bottom!
Even if this doesn't work, it's been a fun adventure.

looks like your having a good time lol but tha bad news is the phone is toast. you can keep it in rice for a year and it will never work, and if by some one in a million chance it does, it wont last a month before its totally dead. you cant stop the rust/corrosion and you cant undo the damage it already did by drying it, if there is even any moisture left at this point to dry.
if there is any chance the phone will work again at this point it will be from a full dis-assembly. after which, take a stiff tooth brush and scrub all the connections on the board, be gentle around any components that seem delicate. there is likely tracking across connections, likely in multiple spots that needs to be cleaned away.
it is also likely that some components are irrevocably water damaged, so even after you clean the board/components, it still may not work.

A valid point that is, but I figured since we go through a 10lb bag of rice per month, and it doesn't take much to submerge a phone in it, it was worth a shot!
It was fun playing around and seeing the internal components of this specific device, and how easy Motorola made it to disassemble it 100%. I fixed an iPhone 4 front/back glass for my niece, and man, that was one pain in the a$$. Never again will I touch an apple device.
Thanks for all of your help everybody, you all have a great week!

Just for s***s and giggles, try soaking the whole thing in WD 40 then in 99% rubbing alcohol. Just the MOBO and connectors. If you still have it. Tried this with a LG flip phone and it worked, but then tech wasnt as iffy.

I know that I am gravedigging this post but I am only trying to help save this man's phone from the advice of some less experienced users!
Your friend's battery possibly died while it was rooting, in which case the battery would not be able to maintain a state of charge unless it has a fully functioning ROM on it. It is just a possibility, but all of the symptoms you described (light on when plugged in, randomly flickering, no response from screen or buttons, light flashing off when pwr + volume up and down pressed) happened to my phone, and I fixed it by simply creating a Micro USB factory cable by soldering the connection of pin 4 of a micro usb cable to pin 1. Then you should be able to flash stock when the device is plugged into the computer.
Also, it really looks like there is no water damage. The colored areas you are talking about is tape that is installed at the factory. If you remove the colored tape, then Motorolla will know you tampered with the device and violated the warrenty.

this happened to me because of a bad flash. there's a way to fix it, but nobody has figured it out for the razr hd yet. theres a few HTC and S III unbrick programs out there, so maybe theres hope. if you plug the phone into a computer youll see QSHUSB_DLOAD as the device id. far as i know thats as far as i can get with trying to fix it, only because the info out there is for the HTC and S III's. any ideas on where to go from here?

There is nothing I have seen that will get you from the QSHUSB_DLOAD back to a working phone.
