So I had previously rooted. I took the previous update so I was not unable to unlock the bootloader(so no rom testing for me). So being rooted I removed all of the bloatware from my phone. I'm reading now that this isn't the way to do it and that you should freeze apps.  I'm guessing so that you will be able to unfreeze the apps and take ota updates if you desire to??  I for some reason wanted to see what the current update was and tried to do it but it kept failing on my phone, I'm assuming because of the deleted apps. So I made a backup of all my apps, put the phone back to factory and took the update.  Now I know I'm stuck without root(bad move, but learning).  But the XT926 lets you disable apps in the settings and they disappear from your app drawer(still take up space like freezing I assume)

So what benefits do I get out of rooting vs just disabling the apps that I don't want to see on my phone??

Root of course is all personal preference...

There are a ton of root only apps out there such as lightflow, file explorers etc

You could still run custom roms using Safestrap.

There are other root things such as Xposed framework which allows a ton of rom modifications and customizations.

thank you.. So if no mods are done will a rooted phone run exactly as a non-rooted phone?? (smoothness, battery life, etc) .. My phone doesn't seem like it is running as smooth and some apps tend to crash a lot now.  Is it just because of the 9.30.1 update??

Yup should run the same. Root will not affect performance. You may just need to factory reset the phone through your settings panel. Usually a good idea to start fresh after an update.

I had already reset the phone and I flashed the newest firmware/ build (not sure of the difference) onto the phone and started with a fresh phone.    I put on apps that were backed up from "app backup and restore" though

Is the reason the OTA update didn't install because I had deleted system apps from the phone??

After the update to 9.30.1??

Yes to your question about system apps. The update needs to see all the bloatware

I tried flashing a bunch of different builds after the system update trying to get root back before I found out it wasn't possible.  When I realized it wasn't possible I just flashed the latest build from the SDK site I think.

I think you got the point of rooting. Removal vs disabling apps has the same affect except that disabled apps still take up space on your phone's "disk" memory. Removing the apps allows new information to be written to the drive, overwriting the old data. So if you had no external SD storage, this is pretty much a must if you like to install lots of apps or keep lots of data on your device. Tapped via Tapatalk

Unrooted you can only disable certain apps... you can't disable them all rooted you can freeze or uninstall any app you desire (even ones that are needed for the device to run)
