Is there a substantive difference between the preloaded ICS browser and the Google Chrome "app" on the Play Store?

If so, has anyone installed Chrome and uninstalled the ICS browser without issue?

Substantial differences. You have to try chrome first. If you like chrome enough simply use Titanium Backup to delete browser

Huge differences, Chrome is way faster and smoother.

In my ROMs I always delete the Browser.apk, then just add in the chrome apk to /system/app, then reboot.

On KOA ROM I have a chromebookmarkssync.apk that I use and the sync automatically between builds and between your phone and your PC.

idk how everyone says chrome is WWAAY FASTER and SMOOTHER. It seems to load web pages much quicker, the animations are nice, and the sync function is nice too but dam the scrolling. every time I scroll past an image or a complicated website, chrome chugs. The scrolling of chrome is its undoing. If I scroll to quickly, chrome has to render the page and causes even more stutter. I've noticed on 4 different phones and a rooted kindlefire that the ICS browser is much smoother in that respect. Perhaps its just me as I tend to be somewhat manic with phones and I scroll to quickly. Perhaps if I scrolled slower (errr), Id have a more consistent experience. I will say though that on Gingerbread, the most even, consistent, smooth browser was Opera mobile. What I consider smooth and quick is scrolling and general performance of the browser. Intuitiveness is a whole other story. I tried opera on ics the other day and boy was it chugging to keep up, perhaps the drivers haven't been updated for ics but at the time it was quicker then the iphone 4 browser, supported flash and helped me regulate my data. Lately though, I've decided to get my moneys worth of unlimited data because how Verizon is going around raping people on pricing... again, off topic lol.

Opera had their own proprietary hardware accelerated graphics drivers that worked perfectly on gingerbread, at least with the adreno 205 gpu on my good 'ol Incredible 2.

I rolled with Chrome for a while, but I did not find it much smoother/faster than the ICS browser. And until the Quick Controls from the ICS browser labs make it to the Chrome, I find it inferior for use with one-handed operation. Those Quick Controls are just butter. So, my Chrome sits frozen...

I personally prefer Chrome over anything. I can use my phone to mark a bookmark, hop on my PC, there it is! Multiple tabs, opens fast, faster browsing. I love it!

If you use Chrome on your computer, you just have to enable synchronizing in the options of the Chrome browser on your desktop. Once you do that, open Chrome on your phone and they'll all be there. This will also sync them with the stock ICS browser.
