The hype and excitement over Dropbox and all the other cloud storage apps never ceases to amaze me. It's inconvenient enough to use and limited in storage enough that I just don't get it and why people go out of their way so much to get referalls for more space. I want to know if I'm missing something.

Here are the reasons I don't think I need Dropbox. You can imply what I know about it from below.

1) Everything important to me is backed up remotely somewhere. I have photos uploaded to a web server (and hardly take any photos at all anymore), important documents are in Google Docs, on my sd card, on a hard drive and in gmail.

2) It's horribly inconvenient. Gmail backs up all my contacts automatically. Actually, it doesn't "back them up" at all.. but they are effectively backed up with no interaction from me. They automatically show up everywhere I want them -- when I want to write an email, call somebody, or just give a phone number to someone. Dropbox doesn't integrate like this. If I want to look at my resume on my phone, I have to go through the extra hassle of setting up a location to sync.

3) The storage size just doesn't make sense. If you're storing just regular old documents, 50gb is WAY more than you'll ever need. It should also cover photos for the vast majority of people. If you want to back up EVERYTHING, it's not even close to enough.

I have been "kind of" using Google Docs, and it's "kind of" ok. There are a few docs and spreadsheets I like to be able to look at and update while I'm on the go. I can do it, but it's not very convenient still. It takes several clicks and waiting for loading to look at my shopping list.

To each his own is how I will respond to this post.

Also, Google Docs = Google Drive. Same thing as Dropbox.

Except with Google Drive...Google owns the rights to everything you put on there.

Please do not Personal Message me for help or troubleshooting. They will be ignored. Post in threads or start one in Q&A sections.

The user agreement is very iffy with google drive. Also it is very iffy on skydrive. Drop box is a bit better. I don't really understand the point of this post though, I can't tell you why you need drop box or any file storing site. Only you can tell you that.

I fooled with Dropbox about a year ago and subsequently deleted it. A week or so ago, I gave it another try and love it. I have the Dropbox app on my Droid Razr, my laptop, and my server. When I take a picture, it automatically uploads a copy to Dropbox over 4G and then Dropbox automatically downloads a copy to both my laptop and server using my AT&T U-Verse internet connection. I can click a photo and within a couple seconds hear it hit my laptop. I also moved my data directory on my laptop to my Dropbox folder and now have all the data files I need on my laptop, server, and available on my Razr. I have Documents To Go on my Razr, so I can deal with almost any file I have. I can also use my Lapdock 500 to make it even easier if I want to work with those files. When I signed up for Dropbox, I got 2 GB of free space. Soon after I started loading photos up to Dropbox, they increased my space to over 5 GB within an hour. I now have 5.1 GB of total space and 4.4 GB of free space. How can I argue with that? I also back up my total laptop to 2 identical laptops about once or twice a month by using Acronis to clone the hard drives. I use an old Dell Inspiron 700m and recently bought a few identical spares off Ebay.

I find it useful with friends and clients...link our dropbox accounts/ shared folders together and it's a handy way to quickly share files with one another...

Whenever I download apps on my computer, I drop them in my dropbox folder and grab my phone, launch the dropbox app and click to install the apk. I also download roms on my computer, put them in my dropbox, then open dropbox, export the rom to my sd card, boot into recovery and flash away. Dropbox cut the cord between my phone and computer almost completely. I use it all the time.

I use it for all the same reasons and love it. I drop all the wallpapers in my dropbox and them grab them from my phone for quick testing on how they look. Its awesome not having to use a cord all the time and wait for the sdcards to unmount and all that junk.
