Rooting Question

Best Answer cvhovey , 12 December 2013 - 07:38 AM

just in case you need the link for rooting the non-Dev Moto X (4.4), here it is:

http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=2538896

Thanks, I'd found that thread ... but in my view its now only semi-helpful as threads on xda end up with multi-carrier / multi-device-model comments. Now to make matters worse, the site hosting the needed sbf files has crashed, apparently due to 2 hard disks failing so it may be some time before sbf files are available again.

I should be getting my Moto X (VZW retail version) via FedEx tomorrow. It sounds like those receiving theirs through the $150 off promo will be 4.2.2 version.

(Don't get me started as to how Moto screwed up and I lost a Dev Edition in my cart during the Cyber Monday sale.  :angry )

Anyway, from all I'm reading about non-DE Moto X rooting, it sounds like rooting 4.2.2. then upgrading to KK would mean unroot, OTA, then once again re-root compliments of jcase. So it would appear my better alternative would be to activate phone, update to KK, then root, right?

But if there's a better way to go about it that I've overlooked, fire/flame away.....

I haven't read through what it takes to root KK but from what I have seen it requires DOWNgrading, rooting them going back to KK but I would read through Jcase's thread on xda to make sure.

Which SBF(s) do you need? I have the Moto X 4.2.4 and 4.4 (Kit Kat), I may be able to upload them to my Google drive and share them for a bit (never really messed with it much, not sure how that sort of thing works).

I was able to get VZW_XT1060_4.2.2-13.9.0Q2.X-116-MX-17-57-X-1_CFC_1FF.xml.zip which is supposed to be the camera update (4.2.4 ... I guess). If so, that should do it for the time being, giving me a safety net to back to pre-KK if I have to start over.

But first, to get my phone. Should have been here yesterday. But FedEx continues to sit on it, whining about how busy they are and that they would "try" to deliver tomorrow ... if not, on Tuesday. Neither Moto nor FedEx show any interest in getting this right. My Moto X must be cursed....

In order to root moto x on 4.4 you need to be on 4.2.2 camera update first. Then follow the slapmymoto instructions on xda. I pm'd a copy of the .sbf files for 4.2.2 to user named pilot. He posted them to the forum.

^ Just downloaded and verified md5 on that  getvar-modified .sbf file so I can do at least the camera update. Will wait on KK until some more dust settles ... crossing fingers jcase releases the smm v1.0 update in the near future.

so your not updating to 4.4? Because of root method or? Whatever you do don't run motowpnomo until your sure about what os your going to run. Until slap gets updated because once you disable write protect its permanent and you can't root after until slap is updated.

Have a head cold that's trying to melt down my brain, so been wading thru the slap thread for the occasional useful posts (sigh) ... those xda threads can be a zoo, cluttered with too many posts where people try to flash wrong files on differing phone carriers/models. Seems the many slap failures are related to those who used some earlier root tool and/or motowpnomo?

Slap is a little in depth. Not your typical root method. If you take your time and wait like five minutes between reboots it should work for you.

I'd thought all Xs to-date were shipping with the original 139.10.53.ghost but my box (not yet opened) says its 139.15.1.ghost ... checking moto's vzw release notes, that's listed as the camera update, so apparently I'm already at 4.2.2 out of the box. Unless this head cold fried brain, that apparently means bypassing slap's step 1.

I believe that to be correct.

I got to thinking and correct me if I'm wrong. As long as I don't mess with wp, .sbf should be a safety net to go back and start from scratch / re-root as needed if messing up, right? Normally I'm not used to motorola .sbf files popping up until several / many weeks later. With the camera update .sbf in hand, even if I bork something in slap, I can rsd back to 4.2.2. Of course, its not a 100% safety net, but have to shift my thinking with all the .sbf files released by the time I got my X.

By the way, sbf.droid-developers.org is partially back up, though old bookmark links may need to be changed. For verizon moto x only the kk .sbf file is up so far, but assume the rest will be up as they finish restoring the hard drive(s).

yes, you are correct in this instance. When going from 4.2.2 to 4.4. you can downgrade from 4.4 to 4.2.2. I did several times. Even with wp disabled you can downgrade. The problem arises when wp is disabled and you want to re root.
